Yeah… ‘punk’ is an actual lifestyle, maybe you could say an ideology, or parts of an ideology, or a framework for ideology.
When you just wear it as a costume, you’re not only missing the point, you’re disposing of the meaning the style is supposed to signify… you’re gentrifying a concept, and very likely commodifying it.
Now of course I don’t expect every young person, young adult to … grasp all of that… would be very stupid to ‘well ackshually’ some kid just trying to express themselves as unique, in some way.
But maybe, hopefully, some of em will read this, and it’ll spur them to look into the actual history, the actual ideas… realize that how you live is incredibly more important than what you look like, while doing so.

Out of curiosity, because I wish to understand your reasoning. What you’re saying that even though they wish to dye their hair in unique bright fantasy colors that they wish to remain anonymous and inconspicuous in public. Logically that seems like the opposite. If I also like having unique colored hair then I should ignore that we have something in common and not draw attention to it?

I think you might be confusing a few things?
It’s not that it’s done for no attention whatsoever, it’s that the phrase “they’re just doing this for attention” is a way that people dismiss each other, and ironically, over-fixate on people who just want to pay for their groceries and leave, you know?
By being fashionable in socially unapproved ways, people will assume you’re being vain as a euphemism for their relative disgust, and vanity loses you a lot of social capital—aura, basically. They’ll rather think of you as prissy than serious.
But you can comment on a person’s hair if you like it, same as you would a band t-shirt for a group you both like.

The commodification and commercialization of punk culture is a tragedy. BY DEFINITION if you’re punk you are rebelling, it’s not just a clothing style.

I’m a dude so maybe a little different but if I dyed my hair bright blue or pink then you can bet on it getting attention. And when asked whey I did and I’d say “oh man I didn’t want anyone to notice!” People would rightfully call me out on that being bullshit.
Its ok to want the attention of fellow humans around you as long as you aren’t manipulative about it. But to do it and seek it out and then act like its bothersome you are getting attention for it is strange behavior.

This is where the disconnect is for you.
People can want to alter their appearance for their own reasons that have nothing to do with socialization. Sometimes it’s just because they want to treat themselves, try something new, or just feel good about how they look.
While I think that caring about how you look is not the same as “attention seeking”, I think that “feeling good about you look” is still related to socialization.
If we didn’t care whatsoever about others, we wouldn’t have any reason to care about how we look. It doesn’t have to be consciously thought like “if I do that, I’ll be more attractive to the other sex” or “if I wear this, my tribe will recognize me like one of theirs”. But feeling good about your appearance is still, in a roundabout way, about socialization, I think.
When I look in the mirror and see myself with my long hair (as a man), my metal band shirt and a wristband with norse symbols, I feel great about myself. But I think it’s not random coincidence that I happen to be really into metal.

As a kid I thought about dyeing my hair one day because hair-dyeing and gay culture were big, and i definitely wouldn’t have been doing it “for attention” - rather just to see how it looks, and in case it looks better than my natural hair colour.
I don’t think people like looking better for the sake of more attention, but rather to be perceived better when they do get noticed, which hopefully continues to happen at the same rate.
People tend to think in terms of “how will my current social circle respond to this change”

They have their feathers like thst because they’re born with it. Because of natural selection. Humans make cosmetic changes which are not related to genetics.
This can help with getting “naturally selected,” but people also present themselves for work reasons, status signalling, signalling role specialisation, religious belief or other philosophy, fandom (which i’d ssy falls into philosophy or religion).
So the last 3 of those - roles, religion, fandom - might in some way help to stand out to mates seeking those traits or beliefs, but aren’t primarily for that.
The former 3 are more about integrating and socialising with others, not about attracting mates.
I know a muslim woman who fully covers her hair with hijab in public and still colors a few select strands red if that introduces any new perspectives.
Besides humans not being peacocks, I think there’s a philosophical difference between being genetically programmed to get attention and actually consciously desiring attention. And wanting to look a certain way is not the same as wanting attention at any given moment from whoever.
Yes. Dying your hair crazy colors will get you attention. But it doesn’t mean that you dyed your hair because you wanted attention.
If my dog goes too far away, I will shout its name very loud so it hears me and comes back to me.
Doing this will inevitably draw the attention of most of the people around me. But that was not my intention though, I just wanted the attention of my dog. The attention of the other people is just an unavoidable side effect. It may even be an unwanted side effect.
