Have you heard of the idea of vegan plus bacon? Something like someone said i would go vegan but i just love bacon. And the response was, ok, go vegan plus bacon.

Basically don’t think of it as all or nothing. Being as vegan as you possibly can is better than not trying. Imperfect veganism still makes a difference.

I am working out a diet that is primarily vegan but get to keep chicken for now. Until i figure out something else to replace it. Also sometimes pork, but only sometimes.

If everyone did it there would be far less need for factory farming, harmful inhumane killing of animals and damage to the environment as we would all be eating sustainable and environmentally friendlier foods. Just with some bacon.

This mentality has me and my family eating dramatically less meat than we otherwise would and I hope to continue that slide, I think it’s a great strategy most folks who want to try can use to get started.

I get it. In the end it’s a half measure that allows lots of suffering and may keep folks comfortable with that in a way that a stricter commitment doesn’t risk.

For me it kind of “unlocked” a focus toward harm reduction rather than promises to try hard someday, and allowed us to begin on the path. I’m not sure where we will stop, but we weren’t on it before.

I hope you know I’m not blaming you. I went from “I think vegetarians have a point” to “well, I guess I’m vegetarian now” to “fuck being given dairy at every event, I’ll be vegan now”, so I can’t fault your for reducing over time.

(I could say I then went to “burn-the-abattoirs vegan”, but in truth, burning the slaughterhouses seemed like the obvious moral position once you see what they do in them.)

Anyway, I support your efforts to reduce the pain and suffering.

          Just avoid buying it.

Simply avoiding meat is a lot easier than going completely vegan. You have a very good motivator to do so right now too.

In the case of the lettuce parasites, cooking does render them safe.

I wasn’t joking, kilt lettuce with potato cubes fried in the bacon fat and crumbles of crispy bacon is amazing.

You can also stirfry it with some garlic, and ginger, salt, and sugar, just make sure you get the oil super hot before you add the lettuce, cook for like 30 seconds, then throw in cornstarch slurry and remove from heat. Maybe fry it with some blanched carrots, bell pepper, w/e.

              Theres also soup.

the big orange man wants americans to have government subsidized hamburgers so people think that food costs arent as insane as they are, but he refuses to say where he’s getting it from. the general consensus seems to be that he’s allowing the import of a bunch of meat that was rejected by other countries for failing to meet quality standards. because that’s how you help struggling cattle ranchers, after all.

Tempeh and TVP are soybean products and also really good.

They’re proteins with a meat-adjacent texture and a blank slate for flavor.

But seitan crisps up soooo good. There is this place near me that has these Korean seitan “boneless ribs” type thing with some wasabi/mustard sauce and my apologies to your sphincter but they would be worth it to try.

If you can afford to gamble $25 on the advice of an Internet stranger, do this:

      • Buy a 4lb bag of Vital Wheat gluten. (Can be aquired on Anthony’s Goods website.)

      • Mix it about 50-50 with water, and just… do stuff with it.

      • Example1: Mix 350 grams of gluten powder with 450 grams of water (Optional 5 grams of MSG) and stir it together until it’s a big blob. Pick it up and stretch it in every possible direction and knead the absolute shit out of it. Divide into 7 portions, and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 250°F/120°C for about 2 hours. You now have a 50 grams of protein blob for each day of the week, to be sliced and dovided however you wish throughout the day.

      • Example2: Get a ripping hot skillet and dump in Some™ gluten powder and Approximately® twice as much water and vigorously stir it with, like, a fork or something like that, and dump some cooking oil on it as an afterthought, and dump some spices in it and boil off all the water to make a fake Taco meat mix. If it sticks, take it off the heat and add a splash of water to unstick it, and it’s okay to jave juicy taco seitan crumbles. You actually cannot fuck this up.

      Enjoy.

Definitely use bread flour if you make it yourself. The higher the protein, the better, because the protein is what you’re getting out of it.

To get 4lbs of gluten (dry weight), you’ll need 30lbs of white flour. You’ll get seitan for about half the price if you make it yourself (assuming flour is $0.50 per pound)… but I honestly think it’s so cheap that it’s worth it to buy the pre-processed gluten powder. Also because I’ve tried making it myself from flour, and I just don’t get good results.

4lbs of gluten is 4lbs of pure protein. If you eat 50 grams per day, it’ll last 36 days.

I’ve made the seitan recipe printed on the back of Bob’s Red Mill brand vital wheat gluten, and it had a taste and texture similar to bologna. It was actually pretty nice cold in a sandwich, and fried up in a pan. If that doesn’t float your boat, there’s about a billion ways to prepare beans, you’re bound to like one of those.

I’m a fussy autist too, and I absolutely love soya, probably because it’s so bland and umami. I used to make my own soya burgers. Tofu is lovely chopped, mixed with sweetcorn and thyme, wrapped in filo pastry parcels and baked. Apparently you can make tofu at home with lemon juice as the curdling agent. If I ever get my own place, I’d love to try it.

Tempeh looks like brains, and I spent weeks looking at the jar before I plucked up the courage to try it. It turns out it’s really nice just breaded and baked. But the ones jarred in water taste better than the vacuum packed ones, which I’ve found to have more bitterness, even after steaming or boiling.

Making tempeh at home is a lot trickier as it uses fermentation.

Ironically, switching to a plant based diet in 2014 actually expanded the variety of food I ate by A LOT. Before that it was just potatoes and more potatoes, and if my executive dysfunction didn’t get me, maybe a bit of boiled veg.

Like virtually every other US government body, the corporate capture of the USDA is nearly total, they are little more than a rubber stamp for whatever the meat industry feels is most profitable. It’s been a long, long time since the US led in the world in the safety and cleanliness of our food production.

Costco was very clear with the tariffs that they would eat the cost and just sue because they felt it was illegal. Low and behold, it was illegal, and they are getting a refund after not raising costs like everyone else. And their customers loved them for it.

This is actually their entire buisness model as well. They don’t really make much money from their products. They make almost 100% profit from their memberships. If I remember right, over 2/3 of their total profit comes from membership revenue. So if they piss people off and make them cancel their membership, that would really fuck them over.

I wouldn’t be surprised if beans are the next thing in their list of stuff to ruin.

Sadly, it’s more common to get food-borne illness from (uncooked) produce than from meat.

I think the worry isn’t food poisoning or parasites, it’s cancer from the latest imported beef. Or maybe mad-cow. I just remember it was somehow worse than explosive diarrhea.

Was it not metal contamination? The cows had screws and worms in them or something.

chloramphenicol - a banned for use in livestock antibiotic

So, the effects are rare. But China turned away beef that tested positive. Then the US government announced a mystery-origin meat to help lower prices. Maybe it was a false positive and a coincidence on the trade deal timing.

But I remember when mad cow disease was a concern. It was rare too. But also not a good way to die.

I feel like we are living the hypothetical, “if a bowl of skittles has up to 1% of them poisoned, do you eat them because your odds are decent?”

If I was only going to vomit a couple times, maybe if I’m hungry enough. If I’ll die an agonizing death from a poisoned skittle, then no, I’ll ty to find something else.

The meat comes from Russia I’d wager . The CIA director travelled on the c17 Globemaster heavy lift aircraft to deliver Fort Knox as payment.

    (I’m being conspiracy sarcastic btw)
