        Welcome! If you want to read about it here you can, they supposedly backpedaled and “it’s not that bad” but there is zero trust in those private owners.

          I remember reading some articles saying that they backtracked.

          I can’t judge how careful the people saying “Audacity is evil” are regarding privacy. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just interested in your thoughts.

          MuseScore is owned by the same company, Firefox is worse (as the article mentions)… Do you not use either of these? Do you use one of these but not Audacity? If the second one applies to someone, what would be the reason? As a matter of principle? Something else?

          (I mean, I don’t know of a FOSS alternative to MuseScore.)

      According to the arch wiki: Audacity #Tenacity_fork

      In May 2021, after the project was acquired by Muse Group there was a draft proposal to add opt-in telemetry to the code to record application usage. As an alternative tenacity was forked by a group of volunteers as open-source software.

      Doesn’t sound like they actually went through with it?

        They did not. I use Audacity regularly on more than one platform. It collects no data from me. It also hasn’t received an update in years, but still does exactly what it needs to do, and does it well.

        That said, I hadn’t heard of Tenacity until this thread, and it looks like I shall be migrating over to that anyway. Better safe than sorry.

          Wherever you’ve been using it from likely hasn’t been official then because Audacity got it’s most recent update 3 days ago. Muse group is still working on it but I don’t trust them.

            Hmm. You are correct. On both my Windows and Linux machines, I am on Audacity 2.4.2. I’ve been using it for years, now. I never changed my sources, and it never stopped working. Haha!

              And honestly, that’s perfectly OK! There’s nothing wrong with those older releases, they just might not quite have the same later feature sets but 90% of people don’t even need those.

                Yeah, and I tried Tenacity, and it doesn’t want to work at all. Guess I’m sticking with old Audacity.

        None actually happened, and they just wanted to track which features were actually used to be able to see how/where to focus their efforts in audacity.

        I think of it as finished software. It’s the MS Paint or Notepad for sound. No development necessary.

        The only reason I’ve used it is because Adobe bought CoolEdit and started “developing” it, a.k.a.: Turned it into paid bloatware and changed the name to Audition. So, I found Audacity which is free, small, to the point and quick to use.

        If you do need more features you’d probably be better off switching to something else in the first place.

    Ouch… Another project being Enshatterfied™ (I’m avoiding a swearing word). Starting from what version that the Audacity becomes so Enshatterfied? Here I have Audacity 2.4.1, before Audacity was bought.

          Because censoring yourself needlessly like that constrains language, making it narrower and less useful for no good reason.

          It’s the equivalent of playing the guitar using only 5 strings because some authority figure told you that the G string is “dirty” or whatever.

            That’s not comparable. On the contrary, I’d argue overly relying on swear words (as is the case in today’s society) significantly reduces the richness of your vocabulary.

            In any case, nobody is forcing you to self-censer, so why impose your opinion onto others?

              It very much is. Just saying “nuh-uh” doesn’t make it any less so.

              If you prefer, though, you can think of it as a craftsman refusing to use a tool because his mom told him not to, even if that tool is the best one for specific parts of the job.

              Of course. Just like overly relying on playing ONLY the G string would make your guitar playing suck even more than if you only used the other 5.

              That’s not a valid argument for avoiding words that are perfectly useful when deployed well, though. Especially not when it leads to the mangling almost beyond recognition of a perfectly descriptive and well-known neologism such as enshittification.

              I’m in my 40s and I haven’t met anyone who’s not either my parents’ age or older, or ridiculously conservative who thinks “the kids today swear too much” lol.

              If anything, people self-censor much MORE than they did a decade or two ago when social media and people trying to promote themselves while desperately avoiding offending anyone’s delicate sensibilities wasn’t so ubiquitous.

              Nobody’s forcing you to object to my objection to unnecessary and linguistically ruinous censorship, so why impose YOUR opinion on ME?

              Maybe because Lemmy is, amongst other things, a collection of discussion forums where sharing your opinions and discussing them with others is the POINT? That’s my reason, anyway.

              That and because I sometimes have poor impulse control when someone is wrong on the internet

                Notice how neither the OP, nor anyone else asked for your unnecessary objection. So it’s very much you forcing yourself and your unwanted opinions wherever you feel like.

                You don’t bring anything to the discussion on this forum. You instead change the topic to nitpick on someone’s wording, completely disrespecting their argument.

                I mention “today’s society” because this push to force everyone to swear (or make them feel bad for not doing so) is a recent development I noticed on this platform in particular.

                It’s also ironic how you seemingly argue for freedom of expression, yet can’t fathom that someone wants to use language in a way that differs from you.

                I’d recommend working on your impulse control. Though it feels like you just like to hear yourself talk. Just let other people be.

                  Again, my stance against self-censorship is well-funded and thoroughly explained. It’s not just a completely subjective pet peeve of mine that I’ve decided to foist on anyone, much less nitpicking, try as you might to make it appear so.

            Imagine thinking “shit” is so offensive that it should be censored.

            Not only has the word as we know it today been used since the 14th century, it was a similar word for so long before that, it was a word that split into two words when English and German separated. Originally, it was ‘skit,’ which evolved into ‘shit’ in English and Scheiße in German.

            “Shit” or its variants have been used from classic authors as varied as Geoffrey Chaucer, Ben Johnson and Johnathan Swift.

            I mean I can make similar arguments about ‘fuck,’ but at least you can put that up to sex prudishness.

            Their home instance doesn’t even ban swear words, they probably just misinterpreted the “no slurs” rule. The first rule is “don’t be a dick”, so banning swearing would be an odd choice.

      Enshitification is a technical term and censorship of that word would mean you should avoid the people who are censoring it!

        The technical term is “platform decay”. “Enshittification” is not the term to lead with if you want people not aware to take you seriously.
