Americans elect a moron to the presidency every ten to fifteen years going back to the country’s founding.

It’s not a matter of recovery so much as a hurdle that liberal democracy routinely stumbles over.

I don’t know that its ever been quite as much a moron as this guy. Dubba was dumb, but not “rip out USaid” dumb.

Love 'em or hate 'em, most presidents (or at least their cabinets) understood that the laws and institutions of the country were all broadly weighted in their favor, even if that meant occasionally accepting this or that particular limitation.

Dubba was dumb, but not “rip out USaid” dumb.

No. He just put the Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association in charge of FEMA right before one of the worst hurricanes in the nation’s history. Then he put John Bolton, a man even Donald Trump dunked on as a war-mongering idiot asshole, into the position of UN Ambassador. Oh, and he put Scalia - a man who recited 15th century poetry to defend a moratorium on gay marriage - on the SC. Oh, and don’t forget putting Jeff Gannon in the White House press pool.

most presidents (or at least their cabinets) understood that the laws and institutions of the country

You are off your fucking rocker if you think Bush 43 either understood or respected the laws and institutions of the country. We were dealing with a Constitutional Crisis every other week during the last two years of his Presidency.

Go back to Reagan, Nixon, fucking Eisenhower. Nevermind how corrupt and mendacious folks in the LBJ and Carter and Clinton administrations ended up being. It’s all the same shit, different days.

Trump feels worse because we’re so far removed from the Golden Era of the New Deal that we’ve forgotten politicians can even be “good” in a proper sense. And when even the gritty Cold War jerk-off of the 1980s are a distant memory, we’ve forgotten that we’re all supposed to be playing on the same team even if we don’t like the Head Coach. It’s the naked infighting that makes this modern moment suck so much. Sending gestapo in to drag women by their hair and shoot paramedics in the face is shit you do in Vietnam or Iraq, not LA or Minnesota.

Trump is Imperialism coming home to the Core. But the policies are as American as Apple Pie.

I did not mean to say he “respected” them, far from it. But he did successfully reshape them. Bush did more to redefine US policy in the 21st century than any other president to come after. What does it matter that he ran up against constitutional crises, when the Democratic administration to succeed him just adopted most of his changes as the new normal?

I’m trying to say that while Bush reshaped and redefined US institutions for those to come after, Trump is just breaking them. There is no way for a successor administration to use USaid, because there just is no USaid anymore. And I suspect Dems will shrug and accept that world as the new normal as well (hell, they’ll probably keep ICE largely unchanged and claim its different now that they’re in the drivers seat).

George W. Bush was not that long ago. He (too) won with a popular minority. He won by shenanigans in Florida with the help of a partisan SCOTUS.

Bush ran as a compassionate conservative_ but he moved hard-right as soon as he was in office. He started abusing power such as his conspicuous legal-boilerplate signing statements. (Essentially, _I don’t have to enforce this law, IF i don’t want to.) He immediately started rolling back environmental and consumer protections.

Then 9/11 happened, and we went to war, and language started pivoting towards Iraq and WMDs. Joseph Wilson wrote an article about how there’s no yellowcake (processed uranium) and to get revenge, the administration (via Scooter Libby) burned the CIA operative Valerie Plame, which was once a huge offense to the intelligence sector during the Cold War. I’m still sore about it, but I’m still sore about much of the Bush administration.

Soon we started learning about the extrajudicial abductions of Arab, Muslim, Americans, extraordinary rendition (to black sites), torture, the prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, the PMC black ops (precursors to drone-strikes) and so on.

It was awful. So much that the Democrats were taking seriously blaxk and women candidates for the first time. So much so, that Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize, mostly for not being Bush. (Even he was surprised.)

I thought the US would never elect a Republican again.

I totally overestimated the civic savvy of American voters.

I thought the US would never elect a Republican again.

People said that after Nixon and Reagan. But it all exists in a vacuum. No real consideration of why any Republicans got elected in the first place or who voted for them the first time.

Also, you’re completely divorced from right wing media. The consumption of this fascist propaganda hasn’t stopped. The production of new fascist IP hasn’t slowed. Consolidation by new fascist business interests hasn’t been disrupted.

What do you think is going to happen in two years, when Dems are running the House and maybe the Senate? They’ll be getting screamed at by all the fascists who were screaming at them under Obama. It’ll be back to 2008. Twenty years, nothing fundamentally changed

“I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016 and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic, morally vacant, and psychologically mangled he is. I do not wonder anymore. He won for that exact reason. He was not a candidate. He was a mirror. If you were a racist, you found your guy. If you were a misogynist, you found your guy. If money was your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart was armoured shut, you found your guy. If you mocked disabled people, you found your guy. If you hated intelligent people, you found your guy. If you were a rapist, you found your guy. If you enjoyed golden showers with Russian sex workers, you found your guy. If you had done absolutely nothing to confront your emotional wreckage, you found your guy. If you were a serial cheater, you found your guy. If you were a perpetual bankrupt, you found your guy. If you stiffed honest workers, you found your guy. If you were a conman, you found your guy. If you mocked people’s appearances, you found your guy. If you longed for a toxic Daddy, you found your guy. If you were dissociated and disembodied, you found your guy. If you were unconscionable in every economic dealing, you found your guy. If you lied as naturally as breathing, you found your guy. If you had never eaten a green vegetable, you found your guy. If you were a white supremacist, you found your guy. If your ego contained a hole so large not even the presidency could fill it, you found your guy. If you were a sociopath who cared not one molecule about other humans, you found your guy. If he had only two of these traits, he never would have won. He won because he had hundreds of them, and millions of people recognized themselves in at least one. This has never been about Trump. It has always been about the people who finally had their worst instincts validated. Trump did not create the cruelty, he licensed it. He handed out permission slips for hate. He is merely a symptom of a far deeper disease: collective toxicity. If there is one sentence that explains Trump’s power, it is this: “He says the things I’m thinking.” That is the part that should chill the spine. Who knew that tens of millions of Americans were thinking such unconscionable things about their fellow citizens? Who knew how many white men felt so threatened by women and challenged by minorities that they were ready to torch democracy to feel big again? Who knew that after decades of apparent progress on race and gender, so many people were living in seething resentment, waiting for a demagogue to legitimize their worst selves and convert their bitterness into political power? We were living in a fool’s paradise. We aren’t anymore." — Michael Jochum

He should raname the Atlantic, the American Ocean…

Rename the moon Trump. Not Trumpworld, just Trump

Antarctica is now Cold America. We can’t expect Trump or MAGA to comprehend America Australis

Canada is now Canadian America even though it makes no sense. Greenland is now Green America even though it’s famously not Green at all, but glacial white.

I want to see if Google and Apple will still humor him, no matter how unhinged he gets. I want to see them shouting to the world how Trump is absolutely the best-dressed emperor in the world.

‘The most uneducated buffoon in history stands at a podium, bloated with self-importance, lips pursed like a carnival barker ready to sell turd milk to the unsuspecting. He grins a grotesque smirk stretched across his face as he scrawls his name onto a hollow decree, a sham celebration of the dismantling of knowledge itself. The Department of Education falls, not with a bang, but with wheezing verbs, suffocated under the weight of his own staggering ignorance. Surrounding him are the usual suspects: cowards in expensive suits, servile sycophants clapping like trained seals, and racist opportunistic ghouls picking clean the bones of democracy. Liars, fools, and thieves all parasites fattening themselves on the hardships of the many. They stand in rigid formation, dead-eyed and soulless, their allegiance sworn not to country, not to principle, but to power, and the dark, festering rot that clings to it. And there he is the convicted wrong, the living embodiment of septic tank spew, his voice a noxious fog of grift and grievance. He lectures the world on right and wrong, irony clawing at the walls, desperate to escape the grotesque theatre of his moral void. The stomach turns, the air curdles, and for a moment, history itself recoils watching, in horror, as the great American experiment teeters on the precipice, led by a man who couldn’t spell “precipice” if his life depended on it.’

            LLMs demonstrate knowledge not intelligence.

LLMs are basically giant knowledge databases with no intelligence. They know a lot of things but they don’t understand stand any of it.

Because fundamentally they can’t understand things. They can only approximate understanding.

It’s no different then if I asked someone to prove 2+2=4. They could tell me that yes that’s correct, because they know it. But they couldn’t explain it properly. Let alone explain why it also isn’t always true.

Hallucinations are fundamentally the disconnect from knowledge and understanding. Everything a LLM says from its point of view is “true” it’s only stating factual knowledge so far that it has it in its data set.

But with out understanding, it can’t tell when that knowledge wanders from a 99% likelihood to be accurate to 60% or 20%. Because it doesn’t actually understand what it’s saying.

It can only state subjective not objective truth. And subjective truth is no better than a fiction with out understanding.

This is why they need a human minder to keep track of the output to correct it back to optimum output when it starts to wander.

This binary distinction you’re making doesn’t exist in any serious scientific literature. I literally have a degree in information technology and have been following this subject for over 30 years now - there’s no real distinction between “knowledge” and intelligence. In fact, compression itself is literally intelligence.

Chain of thought doesn’t quite align with this. It’s possible to predict something not in training if there are sufficient facts in the history to align the probability toward a conclusion. (the “teach a man to fish” approach) Reasoning chains were introduced to take advantage of this, but it’s also possible to prime facts through external sourcing that can be used to extend the predictions. (web searching, document traversal, etc.)

Your larger point remains accurate though. Introspection capabilities are functional but quite limited, and training bias can be quite pathological in a vacuum.

I find it fascinating though that this narrative that AI is just stupid shit is so, so prevalent on Lemmy. I mean people here seem to be quite tech-savvy on average. Surely they must understand what an incredible development AI has gone through in the last 10 years? They must be smart enough to understand that LLMs are a tool that, if used right, are extremely powerful. See all the potential in medicine, chemistry, etc… But all I read is “LLM stupid parrot amirite LOL”… it’s almost infuriating. I mean, I totally get the whole economic point - big tech is screwing us over, I absolutely agree with that. But that is a completely different conversation that people here make impossible to have because they just focus on a ridiculously wrong aspect of AI which is that it is not the perfect AGI they read about in their comic books.
