Men and women. Males and females. Girls and boys. People are obsessed with gender to the point they forget we’re all just human.
Last night I was watching these two chuds watch one of my favourite movies (Children of Men) and one of them, responding to Julianne Moore’s character’s behaviour said “Ah, I HATE women like that!” and it genuinely caused my brain to skip a beat. There was nothing about the character’s actions that was specific to female behaviour. I don’t understand why he couldn’t have said “I hate PEOPLE like that.”
I am an aspiring writer. I did a beta reader swap with one of my colleagues who just like me would like to be a sci-fi author. He was desperate to know how I was “so good” at writing women. Dude, lol, it’s not hard. Literally all you have to do to avoid all the men-writing-women pitfalls is remember that women are human beings first and women second, with all the same desires, hopes and fears as men.
I just watched Children of Men the other day, I have it on DVD. The way they killed Moore’s character off is always jarring, like “fuck, I forgot that she dies now”.

GRRM when asked how he writes women so diverse and authentic.
