Turns out most PMs weren’t actually private since site admins and mods could see them, so they switched to ‘direct message’ as a more honest description.
I always thought “PM” stands for “
PersonalMessage”, which is more or less an okay description. You send a message to someone “personally”, not in-person, but close enough, I suppose.
