    I didn’t give a shit

My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever

It’s not something that I care about, so I just did whatever

I have no idea what instance I’m on

I don’t even know what instances are, or what difference it makes

You know, I actually love reading this. People complain a lot about how complicated the fediverse/lemmy/whatever is and they cannot even sign up, yada yada. And yet here you are, not giving a damn about it all and still you manages to make an account and you are here. Kudos to you!

      You are on lemmy.world

You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don’t have one, they are local to you.

I think that it depends on how you access lemmy. Iirc, voyager and some others allow you to toggle user instances (at least for comments)

That sounds odd if that is an option. My doesn’t show instances if it’s the same as mine. However, since this is all federated, you can have the same username as someone else from another instance. If it doesn’t show instances then that could be confusing at best, if not used maliciously.

It’s not really locked or kept from us. We can just choose it to visually declutter.

I don’t really care what instance someone is from. If I need to know, I can just tap their name.

I don’t really care what instance they’re from, but I do care who they are. It’s like if we just went by our first names here, there would be so much confusion with common first names. You’d need to at least use their last name to know if they’re the same person or not. With federation, you can have the same name as someone else on a different instance. I don’t really care where they’re from usually, but it is important for identification.

In my opinion, this is less declutter and more obfuscation. There’s potentially important information that isn’t being shown. Often it isn’t an issue, but sometimes it is.

i dont know, i dont pay that much attention to stuff like that so i’m not 100% sure about the drama part either, but i dont recall ever being annoyed by such things which is good enough for me. Its not extremely huge instance, around 5k users and 200 posts/ day. I think that helps too. Oh, i forgot to mention that I like admins here too, they are nice people.

Very small blocked list and doesn’t block NSFW. Users should make their own choices. Also awesome stats every month.

This is probably the first sharkey post I see on lemmy. It looks really good, nice.

NSFW is a very generic tag. I usually browse subscribed so porn popping up is not a problem. I still want to see NSFW-tagged footage from conflicts or the occasional mild NSFW art. Photos are blurred by default so it’s not like someone will see it by accident.

Also, your client probably has an option to display NSFW posts. I don’t see any reason for an instance admin to do so.

I heard people I respect talk about it in ways I enjoyed :)

The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I’m absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!

After reaching out and proving I was human, the admins agreed to activate my account manually so I didn’t have to enter a valid email address.

Its a decently sized Piefed Server that allows me to talk about Politics.

I used to use Piefed dot World and before that Lemmy Word but they explicitly and openly support the misogynist, transphobic, pro-war, pro-genocide tankie Lemmy Developers, so I don’t go there anymore.

EDIT: The hecks this little fedicate bubble?

Same here. lemm.ee refugee, wanted something similar in regards to federation policy and admin vibe.

In comparison, lemmy.today is a bit slower, but I’ll take slow and extant over extinct any day.

I migrated during Reddit’s API debacle. I picked sh.itjust.works for several reasons:

    • No email required to sign up (at the time)
    • Hosted the only NonCredibleDefense community on Lemmy (at the time)
    • Had almost no defederated instances (at the time)
    • Consistent uptime (was 99% at the time and still not far off)
    • Hosted in Canada but accepting of US citizens
    • Powered by 98% renewable energy
    • TheDude abides

While some things have changed like defederating from more servers, it’s left up to a vote by users of the server and the vote doesn’t get proposed unless there’s a good reason (such as a server being Nazi-friendly or constantly harassing/trolling users)

I find that keeping the Fediverse open to others as much as possible is a really helpful thing instead of De-Federating on the first little bad message from a user that probably got missed or is being dealt with by the system admin.

The Nazi instance that got blocked literally had something adjacent to “nazi” in their url. Fairly clear decision if you ask me. This was a few months ago so I don’t recall the actual server name without digging it up.

Then there was the Hexbear fiasco, where they decided to federate with us (apparently they have it set up for admins to opt-in to federation instead of opt-out). They ended up swarming all of our communities for 4-5 days with nonstop harassment. Then their admins decided to re-defederate before we could vote on whether to block them. Literally a “you can’t fire me, I quit!” scenario.

Yeah if something has like “Hey I’m a terrible person.net” yeah get rid of them.

With the hexbear that kinda sucks, by the sounds of it they have a lot of traffic and well keeping the system from flooding others is great it kinda needs some work if you are getting that much traffic from one instance.

With Hexbear, it wasn’t just traffic. It was straight up harassment. They were constantly calling our users Nazis, bigots, imperialists, etc. for no reason

For me the biggest difference is that it organizes different crossposts into a single unit. So if the same link is posted in several different communities you can see the comments for each post in the same comment section. Whereas on lemmy you might see duplicate posts with the same link and the comments would be scattered between them.

Piefed also has emoji reactions (kind of like Discord) whereas lemmy just has upvotes/downvotes

              Welcome to the dark side

Note that these features aren’t always supported on every mobile app. For cross posts I recommend trying out the Mlem app. Interstellar works too for that but it’s not as nice of a user experience in my opinion. Emojis aren’t supported in any of the major apps yet (at least not that I know of) but if you’re a big emojis fan and want to see them then you can use the mobile website and it should work.

              Have fun!
