no hobbies. sad.
nothing expensive, or with an unreasonable learing curve. something easy to start doing that requires little setup so i can pick it up anytime i want
you guys got any ideas?
Meditation ( Creative Commons guided meditations )
Hiking ( some old OSM hiking trail maps )
Boardgames and cardgames ( Spiel de Jahres - awards 1979-2026 ) - Game of the year list, any winners or nominated games are excellent
Soap making.
Some silicone molds, lye, measuring cups, cooking thermometer, and cooking oil is all you need to get started. And after a while you will be making awesome smelling soap.
i cant i ateded it all 💔 😭
What about fixing things? like clocks or small electronics. Lots of places have small community groups now.
Maybe a worm farm?
How about whittling or crochet?
Mushrooming. Cuts expenses, and extremely rewarding. Start with one safe type, learn the more toxic ones, and build on that. There are probably organisations or people in your community that can help you get started.
How about gaming?
Geocaching
heard about it and saw some things about it online. still not sure what it is but at least its outside activty (i think)
Almost always outside.
To me, it frequently gives me reasons to go explore lots of new places/parks/etc. And I treat it as “hiking with a goal” (although definitely not everyone does it that way). And I’ve found a lot of really interesting/cool geocaches that way.
Also will do with my wife, family, friends, or solo. And have made friends that way. There’s ever regular meetups all over for the hobby.
There tend to be a lot of geocaches hidden in places like parking lots and things to but I have less than zero interest in that. It has to be somewhere that I would enjoy going to in the first place.
One was hidden in a book in a public library once (with the blessing of the library), which was pretty cool. Another I had to open a lock after solving a puzzle. Another was in a tree and you had to do something special to lower it down (which was super cool). Most I go to are just hidden in a nice place, though.
This! Very easy to get started (finding maybe not as much) and only costs something if you pay for premium.
It’s not expensive. But there’s a cost.
Perler beads. Spent like $20 for a bunch of colors.
Then made various video game sprites like Mario and Sonic.
What hobbies have you liked in the past or have sounded fun? That helps everyone pick a direction.
Geocaching has been fun for me. Gardening but, I’ve gone full !nolawns@slrpnk.net lol, lately I’ve gotten into retro website building in NeoCities.org relearning HTML, CSS and Java script has been fun.
If you have a PC checking the steam sales for cheap games is nice. I just finished my 3rd round of stardew valley.
You can volunteer. If there’s a habitat for humanity near you you can even learn new skills.
You are my spirit animal. Keep up the good hobbying.
Do you compost bro? I have also just started my Geocity journey.
My focus this year has been on self hosting and getting off big tech.
Motorcycle pole-vaulting. On ice!
I was thinking of taking up birdwatching, maybe that?
You could always make extruded incense sticks. You can get started with the spices in your kitchen.
If you live in a city with a parks and recreation department, check out their website for classes and activities.
If it’s a sport that requires equipment, such as racquets or bats, loaners are usually available from the department or other participants.
You really won’t know what your mind and your body enjoys until you actually try it, so just YOLO random activities, but keep it safe of course. Avoid stuff like highrise roof edge parkour, and you’ll be okay.
aw man those parkour videos look so cool though lol
thanks so much for the suggestions 👍
Also, I hate to say this, but you will likely enjoy something that one of your parents enjoys.
Obviously stay away from genetically disposed addictions like heavy drinking or gambling, but doing the positive hobbies that one or both of your parents enjoy can let you interact with and understand your parents, which is a good thing now and later in life.
If you’re in reasonable shape and have the right attitude, regular parkour can be fantastic. My kids had a blast taking parkour classes at local playgrounds: think “the floor is lava” applied to fences, benches, playground equipment.
You do have to be prepared for some painful falls though, even from ground level.
Those videos do look really exciting, but they almost never show that last attempt. That kind of video gets banned.
thats true
Explore your neighborhood
- geocaching
- contributing to open street maps (Street complete)
- photography with your cell phone
I almost commented earlier and suggested Street Complete myself, on the grounds that if someone is sad, which OP said he was, getting outside and getting exercise can be helpful.
That’s very little to go on, so my suggestively is reading.
Very cheap to get into as well as something that’s is easy to pickup and let rest. Plenty of free options around too.I believe many libraries have ebooks now too, which makes it even easier if transposition is an issue!
t r a n s p o s e
Lmao, I’m leaving it. It’s better this way.
retro handhelds.
u can start with getting an R36S for like 40 bucks + a 20 dollar sd card from a reputable brand, just make sure to consult the handhelds wiki for trusted sellers so you won’t get a clone (almost all of the R36S devices sold are clones that have dogshit hardware and often don’t work with a custom OS) and know how to install the OS on new card
it can run nes, snes, all the gameboys, sega genesis, even some ps1, psp and pc ported games. you’ll have to get roms to play the games though but it’s up to you how you’re going to go about that
Definitely read this as “retro hand granedes” and was like woah man, OP wasn’t looking for suicide help! Jesus I need to go to sleep lol
