I hate that my graphics card has some kind of lights I can’t turn off. I’ve never been interested in any of that stuff

Japan is slowly getting better, but it’s a long road ahead. There are more laws and they’re actually enforcing some of them with regard to harassment and hours worked (a lot of people would clock out and keep working, but they’re trying to make the penalties bit enough to stop it from what I hear. My company is certainly strict about it).
It’d be nice to have european-level vacations before I retire, but that I don’t see happening
Modern dialectal ax is as old as Old English acsian and was an accepted literary variant until c. 1600.

So older, yes, but also possibly a separate phenomenon unless certain people happened to still use that variant when enslaving people.
Language Jones is a great channel!
I had to go back into Tokyo the other day from where I live in the countryside. The air definitely has some kind of smell. We do burn a lot of trash for electricity in Japan, but I’m not sure what it actually is. The diesel exhaust here bothers me a lot for some reason even though I think I liked the smell of it as a kid in the US. Not sure what that’s about.
Yeah, Google, Meta, Amazon, and probably others really need to get broken up and get proper antitrust treatment. I say this even as someone who holds stock (like a total of 5 shares, so not much) in a couple of those. I used to dream of working at Google as well, but that dream died quite some time ago based on their actions and culture.
Would you like fries with that for only a dollar more?
As a kid in the '80s, it was just the way some things smelled. Neither of my parents smoked by the time I was born, but lots of neighbors and others did. I later became a smoker and couldn’t smell it anymore. When they finally banned smoking in Ohio, I quit and we learned what bars really smelled like (as I mentioned in a related thread: body odor, mold, and piss).
Edit 2: I worked at a fast food place in '95 or '96 and we had a smoking section, but also all the employees smoked in the tiny break area as well so it came from both sides. I would start smoking not long after this.
Thanks, but, uh:
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and offspring ADHD is not due to causal intrauterine effects, but reflects unmeasured confounding.
My mom quit smoking before pregnancy, and dad never smoked. Still neurodivergent. I’ve not personally heard of a causal link there before.
I second that it’s probably sewage unless it was actual trash waiting to be picked up.
The laws changed prior to the olympics coming, so it’s not like it was pre-corona and pre-olympics. Even some places that didn’t legally have to change used corona as an excuse because of the recommendations of the government (not law). Still a lot of places with smoking.
A lot of Japan as well, though the laws changed to ban it in some places prior to the olympics so (Tokyo, at least) isn’t nearly as smokey as it was before corona and the olypmics.
In the US, I lived in a state that went non-smoking and later a city in another state that did. B.O. mixed with mold and a hint of piss is what it ended up smelling like.
killing ab blockers
I might finally get a six-pack!
As someone who started in tech support in 2000 and is a software developer now: absolutely not.
Fermentation is just rotting with style. Delicious, though.
If you’re saying I’m a weeb, that’s actually a first. I do live in Japan but don’t give a shit about anima or manga and have plenty of criticisms about life here.
I’d argue the way that ramen noodles are made is different enough. Spaghetti is just flour, water, and salt whereas ramen noodles can have an alkaline process (kansui) among other things. Spaghetti is also one type of noodle whereas ramen is a category with a fair bit of variety.
Thank you! I’ll see what I can find
