That open file lock shit is terrible. You can’t even attach a word document in an email if it’s opened. The windows ui is painfully slow even on capable hardware which makes dealing with this even worse. KDE is so fast, ui stuff finishes happening faster than my finger can complete the “click” motion.
It’s always blown my mind how game developers are ever able to get anything done working like this. A game development workflow, working with lots of different folders and different files open in different programs is exactly the type of workflow the windows ui is so bad at. Guess that explains things.
Damn I hope the entire watercooling industry doesn’t collapse. I like having a quiet pc and keeping my gpu cool enough that it won’t eventually kill itself.
You can use hardware store ptfe tubing and vehicle antifreeze. Beyond that, it’s possible to machine your own g14 barbs and then it’s distantly possible to diy waterblocks if you have an entire garage full of machine tools but that’s a monumental amount of effort. You’ll never diy a radiator though.
A couple years ago people were bragging about how ai will never take our jobs. FF to today. IT jobs pay less than fast food in some places thanks to ai and now pilots are going to loose their jobs too.
The issue with ai is that you usually have to be logged in with a Gmail account or something before you’re allowed to use it. If DDG is letting people use it anonymously with no login, that’s a hell of a lot better than any alternative besides self hosting your own.
Who even buys these in 2024 I wonder. Besides hobbiests. As a computer engineering hobbiest, the z80 isn’t a bad choice for an 8 bit computer or any beginner system but damn does that 64kb of addressable memory thing suck ass. I spent like a year figuring out fpgas on my own just so I could escape simplistic cpus with only 16 bits of address space. My current project has 32 bits of linear address space because fuck memory limitations.
The ez80 can address 16mb of memory and runs really fast. Sounds like a no brainer except it’s less versatile than the z80 because all versions of the ez80 except for a really rare model number that you can’t buy anywhere, doesn’t have an external wait state insertion pin. This significantly reduces the variety of peripherals and expansion cards that can be used with a ez80 computer to the point you’re actually going to be better off with a z80.
The z180 seems to be a decent choice though. It can address 512kb of memory which doesn’t sound like much but it should make things a hell of a lot easier if you want to do complicated stuff with it. Actually, upon further inspection this is a better beginner cpu than the z80 anyway. It’s basically just a z80 with more address space.
If ai is trash, why don’t you do better?
I don’t get why ai images make people so upset. Is it because it’s stealing jobs? That ship has already sailed. Try making any money online at any point in the last 10 years, the corpos are just going to fuck you out of it and rob from you anyway. “Section 38 paragraph 34615 states that if a whiny kid leaves a profanity comment on a YouTube video about this, we don’t have to pay you the ad revenue anymore. Sorry not sorry. The ads are still up tho.”

Boeing’s hitman:
What’s the advantage of NixOS? The thing about package isolation to overcome dependency issues sounds attractive but surely that comes with at least some kind of disadvantage.
A month or two ago there were news articles all over lemmy about how they were banning encryption due to “safety” reasons.
I posted this from a vpn that probably uses encryption at some point along the network path. Using encryption is a crime in England (unless they backpedaled on that already). Also, tea is stupid. Please air strike within 24 hours or at your earliest convenience.
Big deal. /s Everything is a crime in England. Writing this comment is probably even a crime in England. I sure as hell don’t have a license to use the computer monitor I’m viewing this on.
I have a virus on my pc. It’s called Arch Linux. I love how they brought over one of the most prominent features from windows: system degradation over time. Not every Arch issue can actually be solved without a reinstall unless you’re one of the top percentile Linux gurus that understands everything there is to know.
Seriously. Even Gentoo works better after 3 years of use than an Arch Linux installation.
I kind of already hoarded so many videos from youtubes last failed adblock crusade that I barely even use the real youtube anymore. Guess I’ll show my disapproval by improving my offline video caching system even more.
My search system doesn’t autosuggest results based on which videos have more boobs in the thumbnail but I’ll get over it.
Arch is cool and all but fixing all the issues every other time you update is a full time job. I can never rely on my system for shit. Sometimes there’s actually a wiki page for the issue but in my experience it’s usually bugs almost no one else has which means I’m on my own. If you’re smart enough for that cool but I’ve dedicated most of my life to only using Linux and I’m still nowhere close to being able to use Arch without spending too much time troubleshooting issues. I think I’d rather deal with Debian repositories being so out of date half my shit is broken because that way at least I only have to fix it once every year or two instead of every goddamn week.
