This country that we all live in? The country of Lemmy? I know the EU have been pretty good at slapping down Google’s anti-competitive practices recently (though it’s a long and slow process and I’ve not heard any news about this particular one yet).

I think Heroic uses GOGDL
Three passengers had paid for an extra piece of hand luggage, that’s a million quid in lost fees for Ryanair
Some good answers in this post from last year, though my vote goes to the classic Bosca Ceoil!
You could try Aurora, it’s made by the same people as Bazzite but with a general (or developer) focus instead of a gamer focus, and while it’s not LTS I think it updates less rapidly than Bazzite.
If your user is really tech un-savvy though, I’d just go with ChromeOS Flex. For all their (many) faults Google do at least produce a simple all-in-one experience, and I’d rather my elderly relative use Chrome’s password manager than no password manager at all.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Should we ditch the idea of three meals a day?English
2·1 month agoIt just seems unnecessary to bring it up in every barely-related thread. We’re all aware of serious problems but not every discussion has to be taken over by the doomer mindset. I subscribe to the fun little communities to get a break from the serious shit, we don’t all need to be talking about the bad stuff all the time!
Your mum’s so bloated hackers are considering supply chain attacks on her dependencies
Your mum’s so old support for her architecture is being removed from the kernel
Your mum’s so easy I recommended new users switch to her instead of mint

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•“Sloppenheimer:” Amazon Employees Mock the Company’s AI on SlackEnglish
33·1 month agoThe problem (well, one of the many problems) is that “AI” is a meaningless buzzword slapped on everything by marketing drones. I’m sure there are some real advances that could be made by what five years ago we’d have called “machine learning”, but the chatbots that everyone’s currently obsessing over don’t have anything to do with that.

6·2 months agoMy thoughts exactly. The very first line of an article says that it’s produced by a company that wants to sell you a new logo, so they’re just implying that it could turn your whole business around. I very much doubt that any of these companies released a new logo and made no other changes to their products or marketing.

4·2 months agoI think most of the uk banks still support them, though they don’t send you one by default anymore (you have to request one, which is fair enough as most people don’t need them). Also they all seem interchangeable, I used an old one from a different back to authorise a large payment recently.
Check out linux-surface for details of what works on your specific model (and if you’ll need to install the custom kernel). I have a surface pro 3, it struggles but basically everything works which is cool.
