They did run on a Democratic ticket but were far to the left of anything that Democrats have ever stood for. Democrats co-opted them, used them to increase their progressive credentials and then sidelined them.

Other than gnome I don’t see fragmentation in your argument. Most of the distros have shifted to systemd, most of them are shifting to Wayland. Immutable is a way of installation.
