Yeah. And I don’t have much family to begin with. And also kinda shit to hear that when you’ve been friends with someone for over a decade.

I totally get what you’re saying. I’ve had the pleasure of having a intramedullary rod put in. I was mean to the nurse but it was wearing off from drugs, I always say fuck off to whoever wakes me up after surgery. Asked what’s your pain level out of 10… 14. I got to keep my leg, and the titanium finally fused with my bone so it’s not as bad as it was when I got it. A month after surgery, I almost threw up from the pain when a car door touched a screw. It’s a different kind of pain.
Everyone sees me as a normal person and gives me shit all the time. But the reality is, I’ve got like probably twenty concussions, broke a collar bone, my entire spine is fucked especially the lumbar section, had multiple rib fractures, broken tailbone, broken xiphoid (part of sternum), broke my nose a lot to the point where I only breathe out of one side, skull fractures, fractures from being punched and kicked in the face, and the list goes on. Everything I don’t do gets blamed on me drinking beer. Like I’ll give you a week in my body and then tell me what to do. Tylenol will kill your liver faster than alcohol and ibuprofen will make you shit blood eventually. Can’t get opiates anymore.
I’m just trying to say no one has a solution and everyone has a complaint. So I just stopped listening to everyone or answer them sarcastically. Why is diesel $10 a gallon? Oh it’s cause I drank beer last night.

For me personally; the parallel of that is that I can fix things and/or upgrade them.

That’s kind of what happened to me. At first it was great, pay was not too bad, I was teaching myself new things, it was really pretty good. Then a decade later, it’s just work to why am I even doing this.
I think the last three years I’ve been working solo, had a co-worker briefly but he needed something more consistent.
So from going back 6 years ago, having three co-workers and going to just me by myself, it started to feel like solitary confinement and I slowly started to hate it. The base pay didn’t change; I’ve been not paid and ripped off too many times, customers suck but at least I shut down a few businesses that way. Then came the complaints about, I would charge $150 for a trip charge and $100 an hour after that. Which is actually reasonable because of all the work before hand, billing, ordering parts, driving, vehicle wear and fuel (I’d have to charge $250 for a trip now because of the all the expenses), tools, etc. And well the decade of experience. Not to mention fixing shit in a restaurant is a crappy work environment and the restaurant owners are the most annoying, entitled, cry babies. So I stopped doing service calls. And just did the $30 an hour, 1099, at the shop for whoever wants to bring their stuff in to get fixed.
I liked the work that I did but not the rest of it and the constant nagging from my ex-friend/boss (learned why you don’t work with friends). It’s like the whole business was set up around me and it just felt worse and worse. So yeah I recently quit and I’m hoping to get a job at a pet store while being a career college student. It makes me happy that there was maybe 10K of lost sales. A family member died, I got sick from the lettuce fun, and then I was told I’m a lazy drunk, get out of bed and go to work, and the kicker “was she really that important to you.” So I just said fuck it, I’m done.
When I worked in retail, it wasn’t bad. I was surrounded by pretty girls… some of which I dated, and well some that I had to smack away with a fly swatter. They let me do whatever I wanted there so it was good, got a 50% raise in a year and a position created just for me that paid as much as a supervisor. Interacted with all sorts of people, it was nice. I’ll tell you, I have to get reacquainted with society. The last three-four years of only seeing an average of two people a day messed me up. I struggle going to the grocery store for longer than ten minutes.
Sorry for the long rant, but I just figured I’d share that I get what you mean.

While those will be the last bastion. Not many people want to do them for many reasons, like running wire in an attic in the summer–you can put a gun to my head and I’m still not going up there (I do my own house repairs, but it’s winter only).
Honestly I wish I just went to retail after moving back to family. My body’s fubar. And I fixed espresso machines; which is a combination of plumbing and electrical. So far 0/5 trainees. They all end up making mistakes, breaking stuff with the hold my beer method, and give up after a few days.

Same. What’s creepier is that the data can be sold or become part of a “data breach” at any time.

Yeah, I use other search engines.; they might not be that much better but at least they don’t start off with scams and “suggested” websites.

Nope you’re all good, spot on. I don’t mind a smart phone but they haven’t been very smart in the last decade. They really kind of piss me off with all the added garbage now. And the whole cameras in cars thing that’s going to be required next year is probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Consoles without physical media is ridiculous as well add in you can’t transfer your account to people is asinine. Same with operating systems, doing everything no one asked for. It’s like every step is not innovation but okay what did you fuck up this time.

It’s pretty good and a good supplement. I, thankfully, can get it at the local grocery store.

I know, I help when I can. Part of why I carry an AFAK to work, had a coworker step on a nail. He didn’t notice because he’s diabetic. I noticed bloody shoe prints everywhere, at least the first aid kit had homeostatic powder. He was good enough to go home with a wrap. While he didn’t panic, I know there are plenty of people that would.

I want to try some Vegemite; don’t worry I have a large jar of Marmite in the fridge, I know what I want.

This is an interesting one.
I applaud your mom for helping, she must be prepared at all times? I mean I carry an AFAK (Advanced Individual First Aid Kit) to work or to the range for example. But I would be totally useless in a traffic accident. Like okay, maybe I can tourniquet a limb, put a splint on (high risk), or use a homeostatic bandage and maybe that will get you by until EMS shows up. Really, unless you know exactly what you’re doing, you could kill someone.
And your sister is completely correct. You don’t have to be right to sue someone, odds are it’s a wasted expense on both parties. Anecdotally, when my sister got into a car accident with my car, the stupid cunt my sister had ran into had the gall to try and sue my mom as well as myself. They couldn’t get to me at all, I was 2000 miles away. If only I had my personal attorney that I do today, I would have sued right back.
It depends on what kind of a nurse your sister is. Not all nurses have the same experiences and well it could traumatize them for life. I would trust a combat medic over most nurses. I mean I had a nurse that fucked up an IV 4 times before I told him hey do it like this, I need to be mobile, tape here, tape there. My mom was a head nurse, and when she had surgery it was funny to hear how many times she had to correct the nurses.
Another thing is your mom might have the eye of who’s viable and who’s a casualty. And that’s a hard thing to accept. I mean going home one time, I saw a guy on the road from a motorcycle crash and people trying to help him. He’s screaming in agony, blood is everywhere. No helmet. Think, a peak time parking lot of cars you see in California traffic surrounding the area. I was like, yeah he’s dead, I think I saw it the news actually creepy. At least my brain mostly blocked out that one except the screams.
So yeah, your sister might not want to experience that nor has the confidence to mend a situation like that.
People eating unhealthy food is partially related to their situation, it could be mental, it could be physical, or simply convenience.
The main thing is to have some form of exercise that people can do and that caters to their energy levels. Granted not everyone can, not everyone wants to. And sometimes, it’s not feasible.
I wrote this in another post; growing up I would eat 5000-10000 (spring vs winter) calories a day and never could get past 125, but I also had gym and track in school, swimming practice, martial arts classes, and a military style torturous daily workout… every day. And I would still go ride bikes with my friends on the street or play tag or whatever. In the winter I would shovel the snow, which would probably be considered child abuse these days. Now I’m not saying do everyone should do that. I even toned down how much I did when I started college but I still practiced to be able to do a triathlon. It’s a shame I broke my leg before being able to try one.
I would eat breakfast, two school lunches, have snacks, eat when I got home, and have second supper. I could easily eat a dominos pizza to by myself (probably did a number on my gut since I learned I can’t eat wheat) and wash it down with some soda.
Now I bring this up because I worked in education briefly and ate lunch with the kids during lunch duty; I can tell you if anyone was as active as I was, I would need at least four lunches to make through the day. Sure it was the healthy lunch implementation, but I the result that I saw was that kids were lethargic and sure it made the classes easy to do since everyone was so docile but I think that was a terrible way to go about it. And I tried their “healthy” lunches out intentionally; if it we’re not for drinking a whole pot of coffee a day, I wouldn’t make it through the 14 hour day (school, after school, and commute).
Also, it’s been so hot this year that my only exercise was mowing the lawn before feeling cooked. I wouldn’t mind going to a pool but it’s more of a hot tub. YMCA has an inside pool but I can’t afford $95 a month. I can’t run anymore because of the metal. And my two bicycles collect dust since I have to go to a trail or a park for biking unless I want to be roadkill, even then I can only do that maybe two to three months out of the year because of how hot it gets.
Even recognizing that people have dietary restrictions is a great start. I can’t eat wheat or lentils, and certain fruits.
Quality, cost, and availability of food is very high on the list. And I’ll be honest, food in America is some of the worst I’ve eaten and it’s even worse lately; I’ve had MREs that tasted better than frozen food that I used to eat as a kid in the US. Mmmm, textured soy protein and emulsifiers.
I felt great and lost weight in Japan, Korea, Ireland, European countries. I was 165 pounds when I got back from Japan. I’m back to 200ish. Sigh. I don’t eat out much and generally cook at home. The issue for me is that meat and dairy have become expensive. And eating rice and beans and vegetables barely gets me by to do daily tasks.
And none of the countries I’ve mentioned are perfect by any means but there is a bigger focus on food health and safety instead of spin the wheel for today’s recall! It’s like I can eat all the raw fish, beef, eggs, raw pork in Germany lol, shellfish and so on but this last year has been wild for food recalls. I mean ice cream? Can’t even trust lettuce or a pepper.
Well I lived in different states for the first two. Moved back to be close to family and started doing espresso repair since it was easy to learn; the downside is after a decade, my hands are in rough condition my back is in pretty bad condition. So I figured it’s time to try something else.

I get that; flying is made to be such a pain now. When I flew ANA, Japan Airlines, or the Redeye; it was nice. Any US flights were torture. Being 6ft tall with back problems, it makes sleeping in cargo feel like a 5 star hotel.
To add insult to injury; I dropped out of college twice. I still don’t have a degree, actually going back to try to get one or rather be a career student lol. But somehow I worked in education, managed a company of 300+, and spent the last 10 years repairing 10k-40k espresso machines. I guess I just was in the right place and the right time.
It’s how I get organic produce for regular prices. I wasn’t trained to be a cashier. It’s an onion as far as I know. A potato is a potato, I’m not a farmer.
