No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I make the most out of a mediocre laptop?
3·24 days agoget in the EFI (BIOS) and reduce shared RAM for graphics down to 1GB. this is entirely dependent on your EFI, I can’t really tell you what to click on. If there’s a search function in your EFI, search for “shared”. Test if you can get away with less if you don’t game.
To strip out the most graphical eyecandy press Win + R to open the Run dialog. Type sysdm.cpl and press enter. go to advanced tab. in “performance” section, click settings and select “Adjust for best performance” then apply, ok.
Run the Win 11 debloat script, that will also help immensely.
That’s about as good as you’re going to get unless you switch away from a toy operating system to Linux. (gottem)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are modern electronic devices (i.e. cell phones) still susceptible to damage from magnets?
19·29 days agoUNIX Neckbeard here:
Magnets use to affect the magnetic hard drives (spinning platter, HDD) that were inside computers. This was especially bad because it would erase data permanently. It was the main concern about magnet+computer that everyone was worried about. CRT monitors were affected by magnets, but the inbuilt degauss or a handheld degaussing coil would usually correct the issue.
If your device has solid state storage (basically everything nowadays) that concern went away. Any other issues (like affecting the compass or accelerometer in a phone) are only temporary.
I have never heard of a magnetic field damaging an LCD and a quick google search says that’s a myth. Pressing on an LCD will damage it, so maybe a really strong magnet that was placed on an LCD that had ferrous metal behind it physically broke some LCDs and the myth was born, when really it was just pressure that broke the LCD.
Do you want it to be so complicated that no one you know in real life is able to use it for more than two weeks before they make some kind of mistake or change that deletes their entire message history and identity? Matrix
Do you want a slim chance that friends and family might use it, but you have to listen to privacy nutjobs tell you your app is a CIA NSA PsyOp and you might as well cc: potus(at)whitehouse(dot)gov all your messages, it’s run by an american non-profit obviously it can’t be trusted? Signal

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are we SURE Reagan didn't cheat in the elections???
14·2 months ago
Reagan only won 50.7% of the popular vote. However because of the electoral college, he “won” the vast majority of states.
Read up on the Electoral College for details on how that works.
it’s been a hot minute since ive been on reddit, but iirc shadowbanned means “it appears I can interact, but in fact my posts and comments are silently being hidden from other users”
it looks like you’re just straight up being banned.
You’re not being judged for looking at Yu-Gi-Oh porn, you’re being judged for not cropping it out of a publicly distributed screenshot.
The client is open source, so it doesn’t matter what the server code is, you can see everything the client sends and therefore tell what possible data is being collected.
It’s run by a non-profit so there’s no shareholders to please.
Your messages and decryption key are not stored on their servers.
It’s been independently audited.
They have publicly posted responses to user information requests where they only provide the account creation date and last access time.
The (admittedly incompetent) US government recommends using Signal (for non-classified information) and top officials have been caught using it (Houthi Working Group).
You can never be 100% sure, but it appears to have excellent security and privacy.

If you CC them on an email, it somehow gets timestamped and added to their blockchain to prove you sent that email with that content at that time.
You ARE giving them a complete copy of the email, so yeah that’s scary and sketchy as fuck, so probably don’t do that.
