  • There’s a legitimate discussion to be had about harm reduction here. You’re approaching this topic from an all-or-nothing mindset but there’s quite a bit of research indicating that’s not really how it works in practice. Specifically as it relates to child pornography the argument goes that not allowing artificial material to be created leads to an increase in production of actual child pornography which obviously means more real children are being harmed than would be if other forms were not controlled in the same fashion. The same sort of logic could be applied to revenge porn, stolen selfies, or whatever else we’re calling the kind of thing this article is referring to. It may not be an identical scenario but I still think it would be fair to say that an AI generated image is not as damaging as a real one.

That is not to say that nothing should be done in these situations. I haven’t decided what I think the right move is given the options in front of us but I think there’s quite a bit more nuance here than your comment would indicate.

  • Hockey really is better than all other sports for fans. I say that as someone who did not grow up playing or watching hockey and only started watching about 4 years ago.

The games are exciting and not too long, regular breaks are built in but when play is happening there’s not much down time, it hasn’t yet gotten absurdly over-commercialized compared to many other sports (in both senses of that word), and attending a game is more fun than any other sporting event I’ve experienced.

Seriously, I’ve been to hundreds of football games from middle school all the way up to professional, along with quite a few baseball / basketball / wrestling / track events and I would say all but one of my all-time favorite sporting events were one of the relatively limited number of hockey games I’ve been to. They are a ton of fun even for new fans who have basically no idea what’s going on.

  • Trump looks poised to win the popular vote as well. The system doesn’t help but the problem is ultimately us, not the system. We have failed culturally, socially, spiritually, emotionally, however else you want to describe it. Look the failure in the face and prepare yourself to deal with it for the rest of your life.
