Linux@lemmy.ml•Could somebody help me change where Steam installs Proton/compatibility stuff to?English
23·4 months agoIn Steam’s settings you can add a new library folder on the larger drive. The compatdata will install to the same library folder that the games are installed on. You’d have to move the games to the new drive as well. That’s the simplest way to do it

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are you friends with any AI bots?English
4·4 months agoI’ll admit I’ve used ChatGPT to get answers to absurdly specific use cases that I couldn’t find with a regular Internet search, but I’ve never “talked” to an AI not because they can’t “talk”, the LLM has no conscious way to understand the text it’s regurgitating. Nobody should be trying to become “friends” with an AI bot

My Dad convinced me to try it, as a way to learn more about how computers work (ie without Windows). I installed Ubuntu and didn’t like GNOME, but once I saw that all the same programs I used on Windows were still available on Linux, I knew it was worth finding the right distro. I used Linux Mint for awhile because Cinnamon DE was nice, but eventually I needed a more up to date version of something (I can’t remember what) so I installed Arch with KDE instead. I’ve used it ever since.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do you think The Boys is an accurate representation if real people had superpowers?English
65·5 months agoThe realistic thing about The Boys is that it isn’t a world where normal people get superpowers, it’s an evil company making superheroes into celebrities for profit.
It all makes sense now. Another day I’m glad to not be a gambling addict

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone know any "kafka-esque" music or audio stuff?English
4·8 months agoResident Evil: Revelations 2 was heavily inspired by Kafka and quoted him constantly. Maybe the game’s soundtrack has something you might be looking for. https://archive.org/details/resident-evil-revelations-2-ost
It’s not the ads I hate, it’s the data harvesting I hate. Static ads without trackers don’t exist on YouTube, unfortunately.

Linux@lemmy.world•Anyone use a voice/mic modulator they can recommend?English
10·9 months agoEasyEffects has a real-time pitch filter that works for me. I don’t understand how it works, but I didn’t need to mess with audio routing, I set applications to use my mic and EasyEffects somehow still applies the filters.
Tom Scott polled this years ago, good video. https://youtube.com/watch?v=ALy6e7GbDRQ

Is there a difference when sharing the whole screen versus sharing only a single window?
You could use a virtual camera like the one included in OBS to share your screen with the cursor showing, but that probably won’t share desktop audio by default.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it weird to sometimes wonder whether everything you know is wrong?English
30·9 months agoIt’s a good thing to question your beliefs every once in a while. Sometimes people get things wrong, and sometimes ideas need re-evaluated.
The way I look at gay/trans/etc is to take MLK Jr’s advice: judge people by the content of their character.
If it comes to the point where the government is so bad that civilians have to fight against it, then the soldiers and police officers should join them.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is "Not to mention" and "Not to leave out" the same thing basically?English
24·10 months agoIts a difference in connotation, which is highly subjective and may or may not exist at all.
To me, “Not to mention” implies a bonus thing to consider that doesn’t need to be mentioned to form a complete thought; it’s just additional context.
On the other hand, “Not to leave out” is a crucial detail that needs to be there for everything that was said prior to make sense.
Both sayings are still mostly interchangeable, but connotation is the reason that so many synonyms exist.

Knife and fork for pizza?! Did they not wash their hands or something? That sounds like something only the insane would do
