  • I did get to meet a sociopath once while working construction. Some of the guys at the company liked to go to music festivals, and you meet some odd folks there. Well one of the guys made friends with this dude who was down on his luck for some reason or another and he got hired on with us.

He was manipulative, but not very good at it. He would shower some people with compliments, like constantly and for pointless things. But if he didn’t think you were worth sucking up to he would absolutely refuse to do anything you asked (which he tried to do to the company second before he learned he owned part of the company). He would work slow, was on drugs frequently, and spent any money he got as soon as he could. Money he usually got a week early because he couldn’t afford food since he would spend all his money.

Anyway not long after we fired him we learned he had been in prison for sexually assulting a minor, and was back in jail for something else.

Thankfully I wasn’t important enough to get his attention, so I never got to interact with him directly.

  • Not just music and politics, it’s big into blue collar now too. Carpentry and building (non-union stuff like mansions), I know a lot of groomers (people who groom ski trails) on coke. Really any job that benefits from you working long hours. Sometimes it’s worth it for the overtime, or if you own the business then finishing the contract fast may have a bonus.

  • I think they usually use several layers of thick glass for these floors, so even if you dropped a coffee mug on the glass and it broke, there should be several more layers under it that should still be plenty strong to support your weight. Also I don’t think glass experiences bending stress the same way metal does, where it gets most of its damage from impact fractures. Meaning you can bend glass a lot and it won’t change, but if you introduce micro fractures it can weaken considerably. So an engineer would probably consider the first sheet of glass as sacrificial.

Been a long time since I read about this stuff though, would love input from someone better read.

  • Probably not helpful but when I was roofing and at work for 11-12 hours a day, getting home and going for a short run really helped out (~4 miles). Something about that cardio gave me more energy and would guarantee I’d at least take a shower after. I think I was only running 3-4 days a week then.

It’s also a great time to decompress, just being alone with your thoughts a little. Then for a while after your heart rate is elevated and you’ve got some extra energy.
