my school had an NCLEX question competition with 4 teams with a student from each active cohort on each team. Each team was supposed to select a theme, team name, and entrance song and my suggestion was going to be “the fifth vital sign” and everybody wear black leather and have the song be Believer by Imagine Dragons. then COVID happened. idk if you’ll find any use in this idea, but I was always a little bummed we didn’t get to use it.

if my mother hadn’t forced me out early to intentionally lower my birth weight (I’m the last child and size tends to increase with subsequent births, my next oldest sibling complicated delivery by size alone) I might’ve succeeded too.

yeah my husband brought this up a few days ago actually and was talking about the movie and I was like do you remember me mentioning that I literally actually did that? 4 times around apparently!

apparently I literally tried to strangle myself on my umbilical cord in the womb but my take on that was that I knew what was coming.

I grew up in redneck country and this was legitimately a problem occasionally. In particular you’d have people / families who consciously knew racism = bad, America fought against the Nazis for a reason, etc, but had a lot of subconscious biases particularly in ways that just prevented them from regularly intermingling with other races.

So they’d go decades just having their insular little neighborhood block parties and family reunions and such that never had a black or other non-white person and just never consciously consider the implications of that. Then one day their kid would bring home a new friend, someone new would move into the neighborhood, or even just a black guy would come to install the new fiber optic internet cables or whatever and suddenly they find out that their sweet beloved family pet hates black people.

and there were definitely some families out there for whom this was more of a feature than a bug, but there were also a lot of people that were suddenly confronted with the realization that subconscious and systemic biases are a thing by the surreal yet glaring realization that they somehow raised a racist dog.

When we got the puppy I had intentionally left the cat’s claws untrimmed for a little over a month leading up and a few after. it certainly wasn’t the only way we trained the dog to be respectful of the cat, but it definitely helped! These days we’ve progressed to more advanced socialization; cuddling on either side of me in exchange for treats. sometimes on a pretty good day I can get them to sit on the same side with a few inches in between, and on a very good day the cat accidentally rubs her face on the dog’s paw while aiming for my hand (the look of surprised disgust is hilarious). The biggest rule that really helped was teaching the dog that if the cat is close by the dog should be belly up. Helps the cat feel safer and makes it less likely the dog will chase.

I’ve been getting back into Christianity lately for a variety of reasons but I’ve also been doing a lot of research into the history and philosophy and whatnot and reconciling:

that outer sphere of what all these different people over the centuries have written and decided to include or exclude from their various compilations and what motivated them morally or especially politically to do so

vs

the inner sphere of my own lived experience with what does and does not make the world a better place and what motivations exist in the modern day to practice or interpret those centuries of texts in one way or another

and honestly it’s actually been really interesting from an academic perspective as well. It’s a fascinating combination of history, language, culture, and even what influences it’s had on the sciences over time like I recently wound up learning some stuff about early geometry and the ways metaphysical interpretation of mathmetical concepts have affected the architecture of churches.

and that actually led me to creating this gif of how Metatron’s Cube is constructed using basic geometric concepts with a compass and straightedge. The animated circles were specifically programmed in FMS logo it was a really fun way to spend my weekend.

the only “um akshually” I would even bother adding to this is that the Torah / Pentateuch is just the first five books of the Tanakh, which is the best / closest approximation of books that later became the Christian old testament. The Tanakh also includes the Prophets (Nevi’im), and the Writings (Ketuvim). There’s also a few books in there that the council of Nicaea (the council of og old Catholic dudes who decided which books were true or not) chose not to include. Also relevant is the Septuagint which was the first translation from Hebrew into a mainstream language (which at the time was Koine Greek) which is relevant because that specific translation has had a profound effect on translations since, which really hammers in that concept of “a translation of a translation of a translation of-”

And trinitarianism specifically is basically just a reason to wage wars. I was raised in a trinitarian denomination and I still mostly consider myself Christian but I can’t reconcile my morals with waging literal wars over fucking metaphysics.

I worry a lot of it is human trafficking or at least human trafficking lite. A lot of employers really like having employees they don’t actually have to pay properly or obey workplace safety and other protections for, and who will be afraid to speak up about fraud and other illegal practices.

But to me that would be easily solved if we only made it illegal to hire people without a permit, but never deport or otherwise penalize the workers. And publicize that heavily. So if you don’t have a permit and your boss is abusing you, just call the hotline on the billboard and let us know and we’ll arrest them and you can go find another sketchy employer and tell on them too when they piss you off.

No one would be hiring people without permits if there were actual consequences for the employer. We wouldn’t be stuck with trying to figure out how to deport people and whatnot. They’d only be able to hire people the law is already protecting as workers. but nobody actually wants to hold rich people accountable for having caused all this trouble in the first place.

Yeah I feel this. Not in any of the specifics, pretty much all of those I’m completely opposite to you in, but just in the overall sense of "yeah this shit’s complicated, I mostly like having sex with (in my case penises).
