Homes are taxed based on assessed value. They are already a form of taxing unrealized gains.

Most of the population either has:

1. no unrealized gains
2. gains in a retirement account that we can’t borrow against
3. gains in real estate that are taxed, but can be borrowed against
4. a combo of 2 and 3

I think it’s fair to ask that the rich play by the same rules. You can either borrow against your gains and pay taxes on them, or not pay taxes and not be able to borrow against them.

Sheesh, now I feel actually attacked a little. I was being mostly hyperbolic, but you can do really useful things with complex figures in presentations. For example: revealing elements sequentially to build up to the final figure or altering opacity of different elements to bring the audience’s attention to specific parts of the figure.

This sequencing can sometimes very subtly alter the size of the figure as you change elements, so the default positioning will slightly change from one slide to the next. Most people won’t care or notice when a figure slightly drifts by a pixel or two during these sequences, but it bothers me tremendously so I add adjustments to keep every variation of the figure aligned on the slides.

I feel personally attacked. Brb, making presentation slides in beamer and compiling 1000 times to get the figure to the exact right pixel.

I definitely won’t make any changes to the figure later that will make me have to adjust the position again. Why yes, this is better than PowerPoint, why do you ask?

I have an uncommon but not unique name and I have firstlast@gmail.com. As far as I know, others with my name usually include a middle initial in their email address but they sometimes forget it. I’ve gotten family event plans, car maintenance reminders, digital receipts, contractor quotes, and even once added to a daycare group (that one I did reach out to the coordinator to let them know and then removed myself from the group).

You’re telling me you never encountered salsa verde before learning the French word “vert”? Even if true, I highly doubt that’s the norm.

And I’m not sure why you think being on the East Coast matters. 13% of Americans speak Spanish at home, less than 0.4% speak French or Cajun at home. That’s a ridiculously huge region you’ve cited that includes NYC where you’re probably going to visit a bodega long before you learn “vert” and Florida which has major Spanish influence, just like the other two most populous states California and Texas. I live about 100 miles from the Canadian border in the west, so by your geographic argument I should encounter more French than Spanish, but Spanish exposure is way more common here.

For those of us in the US, we’re more likely to encounter the Spanish “verde.”

I disagree that that’s what it means, IMO “shuffle” explicitly means each track exactly once. Pedantry aside, what I meant was a truly randomized order when you shuffle a playlist. It’s a major critique of Spotify among users and has been for a very long time.

I really don’t get it. Users have been begging for a true random shuffle for years. It’s not a hard thing to implement.

No sorry, I didn’t mean the image was AI generated. I interpreted the person in the image as being the employee correcting AI mistakes, but because of their hands they don’t correct any of the deformed hands in other AI image gen.

I’m getting a kick out of this hypothetical person responsible for correcting AI mistakes looking at AI image gen with deformed hands and saying “looks fine to me, totally normal.”

In my teaching days (first-year undergrad level), I would always hand back all homework and exams upside down. It’s not my call whether a students’ grade on anything should be visible to their neighbors
