Linux@lemmy.ml•PSA: Nvidia drivers 580 broke gaming on sway / wlroots for me
2·1 month agoTbh I don’t know what gamescope is, but I’ll look into that and try it out to see. Thanks!

3·1 month agoIt’s Gentoo. That could be possible, maybe something to do with the open vs non-open variant. I will look into it.

8·1 month agoI wouldn’t call sway a custom WM, it uses wlroots which has become a standard.
Though I agree that wlroots seem to vary significantly in results with gnome and KDE based Wayland.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it racist to oppose illegal immigrants?
2·4 months agoThanks for your response. Your argument is convincing and I have no refutation, I appreciate you taking the time.
The only thing I would say is I bet this is still fixable with policy without having to ban or restrict immigration. But alas, that’s a different discussion, and your point that there are valid non racist reasons to criticize immigration is correct. Thanks again!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it racist to oppose illegal immigrants?
3·4 months agoThanks for your response! You are making an assumption that most or all immigrants wish they didn’t have to immigrate. I will answer assuming this is true, though I am not confident it is. But let’s go with it.
Changes in material conditions of a country typically occur due to political action. That may be in terms of voting, political movements, or outside forces like war or sanctions. Addressing each of those:
- Immigrants typically can still vote, so no issue here
- immigrants are unlikely to affect political movements when they are immigrating for reasons like work, study, reuniting with other family, or enjoying lifestyle of another country.
- Immigrants have little to no effect on wars and sanctions.
And last, even if what you quoted is true, I bet whoever said it is likely not considering putting the effort of making their country better in the same way they want immigrants to. Maybe that’s not one of the worse forms of racism, but it is one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it racist to oppose illegal immigrants?
5·4 months agoThanks for a thoughtful response. My thoughts:
- In most cases, illegal immigrants do not benefit from government welfare programs, but they do work and contribute to the economy positively.
- In cases where data has been collected, immigrant populations tend to put more into the economy than take through social programs, when compared with native populations. I can provide sources and data on this if you’d like.
- Illegal immigrants may often not pay income tax, but they do pay most other forms of taxes that still end up paying more into the system than they get back. I can also provide evidence on this if you’d like.
- If tax isn’t being collected from someone, when they’re willing to pay it, that is 100% the fault of anti-immigration policy, not an immigration issue.

Programming@programming.dev•Pijul - DVCS, based on the theory of patches, inspired by darcs
2·5 months agoWhen working with git, and I have a separate working copy, my options to sync are either rebase or create a merge commit.
It sounds to me like the pijul workflow is almost equivalent to just doing a merge commit instead of rebasing. Am I correct here? What’s the difference then?

Programming@programming.dev•Let's Make Sure Github Doesn't Become the only Option - Edward Loveall
9·5 months agoThis is mostly due to inertia and, to an extent, SEO.
Most people use github because it’s all they know and its name is almost synonymous with git hosting. Publishing elsewhere leads to people asking you why you’re not on github, how else can we contribute, etc. Moreover, github seems to score better on Google SEO than other platforms.

1·8 months agoNot a libertarian if you were referring to me. I envision a system in which we all contribute and take part instead of throwing all the effort on someone already providing you with the space and expecting them to do it all, when you can more easily do it yourself.

1·8 months agoSure, if I want a community about cooking and instead of finding cooking content I find insults and harassment, then I will leave. That’s essentially an equivalent of the blocking feature I spoke about.
But I find it hard to believe that such a cooking community would become good by just having a moderator ban all the offenders, when they occupy most of the posts.

14·8 months agoOn the topic of admjn burnout, I find it ridiculous that we choose to put so much burden on instance and community admins. Why don’t people just utilize their block functions instead of expecting admins to clean up bad posts and users as fast as possible?
Not saying admins should do nothing, but it should be sufficient for an admin to only do what’s absolutely necessary to keep the instance alive (including removal of illegal content). Anything else should be considered extra credit and no one should be entertained complaining about it.
Please show your work. What is the proof that it was done to consolidate power?
This isn’t to mention that your use of the word authority is strange. How exactly do you determine who has more authority between a US house representative vs. a CEO?

Programming@programming.dev•Is TypeScript a fad or is my manager delusional?
0·2 years agoAny examples other than ocaml? From my understanding, ocaml’s type strength may only be found in a couple other languages. Haskell, scala, and maybe Rust. Any others?

Programming@programming.dev•Is TypeScript a fad or is my manager delusional?
0·2 years agoI won’t remember everything, but one very important things comes to mind:
in Typescript, it is very difficult to assert on a type (let me know if you’re not familiar with what I mean by this and I can explain further). In OCaml, this is trivial using pattern matching.
Why would you need that? The idea of a type system is it doesn’t let you apply a function on a structure without the structure being of the right type. But the lack of type assertion in TS makes people follow hacky workarounds, which defeat the purpose of type system.
There are a couple of other things, like immutable types by default, automatic tail call optimization, functors enabling higher kinded types, etc.
Also in ocaml, you don’t have to annotate any types on any variable or parameter, and you’ll still get full type protection.

Programming@programming.dev•Is TypeScript a fad or is my manager delusional?
0·2 years agoThe only valid argument against typescript is that it is too similar to vanilla JavaScript. It does not go far enough. We need type systems like Ocaml’s.
I suppose you can also complain about needing a build step, but I find this silly. There are so many tools that make this easy or automatic.
Guix is almost like nix but with scheme, right? Any other differences?
I do like scheme. Nix is quite impressive. But my unpopular opinion is I am not convinced it’s philosophy is necessary. Nix feels like a workaround to legacy baggage in POSIX to allow for all its features of full reproducibility of packages and the overall system. Although Gentoo is not exactly reproducible, I feel like the level of control is sufficient to give me the benefits I want.
Nix works for maybe 95% of cases, but the 5% where its workarounds do not work sre annoying to deal with. Gentoo on the other hand doesn’t break so much from the traditional unix way of doing things, but still grants the user a great load of freedom and choice.

But aren’t seedboxes more expensive? Why prefer them?
