  • The sad thing about being a Windows user is they’ve got you between a rock and a hard place. You either upgrade or lose support, and in a lot of cases you can’t upgrade without buying a new system.

I know a lot of people resist learning Linux, but it really is the only way out of the cycle. You can start small at first, dip your toes in. Before long it will feel more natural and familiar than the next release from Redmond. On that day you will be free.

  • If you have a hard drive reader and spare thumb drive it’s not too hard. Just put clonezilla on the thumb drive, boot it, put the new drive in the reader, and clone your old drive onto the new one.

Back in the day I usually just put a fresh install on the SSD and downloaded their personal files from the network copy. I found that upgrading from 7 to 10 had a uncomfortably high failure rate, so it was easier to just put a fresh install of 10 on and go from there.

  • To each their own. Personally I can’t stand MS Office, I think Google Docs is easier for most nontechnical people these days anyway. For the rare cases when Office is needed, the web version works fine on Linux.

LibreOffice works great, and WPS Office is proprietary but at least it’s free.

Personally I write my documents in markdown and use pandoc to convert them into PDF or docx or whatever. It’s like writing the source code and then compiling, I like it.

I’m sure you’ve looked into all that, but for anyone else who is interested in alternatives those are my recommendations.

Whiteness, at least from a racist perspective, isn’t really about skin color, it’s more like a club for ‘approved’ ethnicities. There’s many Italians with darker skin than Mexicans, but Italians are considered ‘white’ and Mexicans are not. Same for large parts of the Middle East and Asia.

Romani are white skinned Europeans, but they’re not ‘racist approved’, so they make up rumors they’re actually from Egypt and omit them from the White Club.

The determination for what counts as white is highly inconsistent. Before the 1700s Germans were not considered white. Before the 1800s Irish were not considered white. For a time in the 1900s Finnish people were considered Asian (while many Finns were striking for better working conditions, what an odd coincidence). Italians weren’t considered white until about a hundred years ago. It goes on and on.

There’s adapters that allow charging at the same time. I’m not sure why audio jacks are difficult to waterproof. Samsung managed it on a few models, so it’s certainly possible.

Personally I haven’t had a situation where I wanted an audio jack in years, I assume the extra internal space goes towards things like longer battery life or slimmer form factors; not nothing, but also probably not a big deal for most people.

It seems like laptops are doing the same thing: all external ports are USB, and any specific needs get handled with dongles.

USB-C ports are pretty flexible, you can split one into many, use them for video & audio, use them for power delivery & networking, and they can transfer more data per second than cat5. It seems like manufacturers are trying to make it the one port to rule them all.

Waterproofing is very difficult with a headphone jack. You’ll notice virtually every single phone with a headphone jack is ‘splash resistant’ while many without are able to survive being submerged. It also saves a relatively large amount of internal space, for something that easy to move external with an adapter.

If we’re talking about adding back in older communication standards, I would personally prefer an am/fm receiver and IR blaster; it would be cool to use my phone like a universal remote.
