Yeah…yeah. It’s heartbreaking how many people are going to get caught in the middle
The IAEA released a statement that Iran wasn’t holding to their non-proliferation agreements. Acknowledging that Iran is in the process of making nukes depite what they claim.
UKMTO was warning mariners of heightened tensions on June 11th
About the same time the US was evacuating non essential people from Bahrain, Kuwait and similar places
The people in the know were aware that Israel was getting a liiiiiitle more hands on with Iran’s nuclear program. Nobody seems willing to get involved to support or stop it.
That would give any third party a good cop bad cop negotiation position. Have Iran make a deal with them or let Israel continue to have some quality 1v1 time
“strawman”

You should do this with the Lorem Ipsum text lol
People who don’t know might think it’s some based quote from a Caesar or something
SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•*Permanently Deleted*English4·20 days agoMany people I know agree with deporting illegal immigrants and see it as a problem that had been simply ignored for far too long. I found an article talking about deportation flights as early as 2023 (I’ll try to find and link it here, and here’s one from 2024) so it’s not brought on by the Trump admin, but he greatly expanded the scale and publicity.
There are disagreements though, mostly with how it’s being carried out. If the agents are unidentifiable as feds some day someone is going to fight back, or a third party will intervene thinking they are getting mugged.
And there is a big lack of due process to make sure those arrested actually meet the criteria for deportation. No way they are all 100% legit with no mistakes. If everything is legit more due process and transparency shouldn’t be an issue if your case is solid.
SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.workstoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•It's just down the road.English26·21 days agoI met someone from Kansas and they talked about how it wasn’t so bad and that they still can vacation to see cool places.
Then they talked about their 12 hour road trips to Wisconsin and Southern Texas and it made me feel kinda sad for them!
Road trips beat commercial flights though imo
SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If no government shall bare arms against its own citizens. Then what is happening in LA?English6·22 days agoState govts can mobilize their national guard. The guard is the only military component that can be “deployed” on American soil for combat or civil support like riot control or disaster relief
Active duty and reserve bases exist in the US of course but are generally forbidden from being used for combat operations or enforcing domestic policies on US soil. It’s called Posse Comitatus
SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.workstoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•I was jist following ordersEnglish15·22 days agoThis is a reason why I kinda like the psudo religious concepts that back US founding documents.
Now before everyone gets to typing about annoying evangelicals or whatever (trust me I understand) you don’t have to believe in christianity or any other religious institution for the “natural law” concept to work. All it takes is an understanding that human rights are a default and don’t magically disappear because your area’s govt says so.
It’s summed up nicely by this quote from John Locke.
“And where the Body of the People, or any single Man, is deprived of their Right, or is under the Exercise of a power without right, and have no Appeal on Earth, there they have a liberty to appeal to Heaven, whenever they judge the Cause of sufficient moment.”

SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.workstoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•Mall Ninjas got coppettitionEnglish1·25 days agoI never said it was impossible and I don’t believe that either. My point with that active shooter part was that even if you have a really good dedicated team, sometimes the response time matters or things get way worse by the time they arrive.
So if the tactical dream team was a thing how many of these teams would be needed to get a reasonable response time? Would it be one per city, or a set amount per region?
And yeah the police currently have a bunch of tactical stuff they have around and use on stuff they shouldn’t “just in case”
SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.workstoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•Mall Ninjas got coppettitionEnglish2·25 days agoFor a lot of stuff that would work I think. But it also sounds a lot like how they used to respond to active shooters back in the late 90s. Terrorists used to hijack or take hostages to negotiate political demands, not just try to kill people.
So in that case that plan isn’t great when people are helpless inside while waiting on a tactical team. That’s why Uvalde caused such an outcry against the police response. They were crowd control when they had every chance to engage the shooter. You’re right, there’s no perfect plan for everything. I do think a negotiate/deescelate approach would be very helpful
The way it currently works for departments around here is their SWAT guys do ordinary patrols but they have extra training and gear to respond to tactical stuff too. I wonder if we could do the same for the other side of the spectrum and have some officers with extra training as negotiators?
Your comment reminded me of number stations. They are radio broadcasts with seemingly random numbers getting transmitted every now and then. A well known one is “The Russian Buzzer”
They are really long range, and just about anyone can listen in to these transmissions. But only a tiny number of people (in the buzzer’s case maybe Russian spies) know the meaning and act on those signals.
I guess my point is that ultimately nobody can really stop the signals, including dog whistles. And I think it’s silly when people try to make some of those words taboo. For example if “roommates” is a code word for a queer couple living together the legit use of the word doesn’t just disappear
