OpenWRT is a different scope than opnSense.

I have a few OpenWRT devices to cover WiFi in my home and definitely an opnSense on top of them for wan access and all the fancy stuff.

OpnSense can’t to WiFi access point, thanks to BSD limited WiFi cards support, and definitely cannot fit on cots devices like OpenWRT can.

As well as indeed opnSense is a better choice than OpenWRT for edge devices.

While OpenWRT would do opsSense job, at least in part, the opposite is not true.

Crappy (30-40mbit/sec) but uncapped FTTC here, plus 5G FVA at 300mbit/sec but 1Tb monthly cap here.

Combining both and separating heavy traffic (fucking fortnite and many steam big games) on the crappy uncapoed, and arr’ing too, leaves tons of data for high speed anything.

Total cost? 22€ + 24€ = 46€/month, no surprises. A lot more expensive than having fiber indeed, but I am deep into the woods, so.

Ah, and when i go over my 1Tb data cap on the FVA, I get throttled to 6mbit/sec, nothing extra to pay.

There is no “write and forget” solution. There never has been.

Do you think we have ORIGINALS or Greek or roman written texts? No, we have only those that have been copied over and over in the course of the centuries. Historians knows too well. And 90% of anything ever written by humans in all history has been lost, all that was written on more durable media than ours.

The future will hold only those memories of us that our descendants will take the time to copy over and over. Nothing that we will do today to preserve our media will last 1000 years in any case.

Sysvinit on gentoo here. Its so simple and clean, all can be managed and hacked via bash scripts.

I see no benefits in my use cases for systemd. Boot speed is unneeded, service auto-restart is done via Monit, anything else I don’t need.

This is true for all my server -and- all my workstations and laptops as well.

Systemd never solved a problem needed to be solved to start with.

Now that it also does coffee and cream for you, i start seeing some benefits like auto-restart services. Was it worthwhile? Meh, dunno.

At first it seemed another case of “I am too young and I want stuff done my way just because” and redhat shoved it down everybody throath to gain marked dominance. That they did.

At least now systemd looks like mature and finally start making sense. I was even contemplating testing a migration on one server.

Then I remembered, I like freedom of choice and keeping up being an old fart, so I didn’t (yet).

(No, for Wayland and network manager I think they are both welcome and needed from the start).

It didn’t help the main Dev suckass attitude, that didn’t made friends.
