Kind of the same thing with LLM. It’s not because you can that you should.

As you said, LLM is killing OS communities. It’s preventing people from working together, now they are all “I don’t need you, I can do it my way all alone”, and you get 50 clones or similar softwares, which aren’t finely tuned since it’s all LLM.

As you didn’t say, LLM has a huge impact on the planet, it costs a lot of electricity, it uses clean water which it evaporates in data center, but we don’t care because guess what, we have it in our hands and it’s so much fun to use ! And well, we ourselves are not responsible for the planet’s state, it’s the big bad company that create LLM, I’m just using it because otherwise, the other will do so !

What’s next ? After coding our own little games and softwares alone and ultra-quickly I mean.

Who pays the bills ? Who will pay the next one, and where is humanity going ? Not sure I want to know.

AI Searchers are quitting their jobs being scared of what they enabled Companies are being hacked by LLM without control People are losing their jobs because of LLM (and I think those are not the ones using LLM in the OS Community, because oh, the irony it would be)

Society clearly isn’t ready for any of this, and saying “don’t care” doesn’t make it fine.

There never was. It was only a sea of different instant messenger protocols, and each had their pros and cons. So much that you had meta messengers, doing multiple protocols. Trillian for example. You had to get multiple accounts and softwares to get everyone.

I personally use DietPI on my headless servers, which is a derivative of debian, and PikaOS on my personal computer, which is the bazzite equivalent of debian. It’s great really :). At this stage, i’ve been so used to debian derivatives that I simply don’t want to use time to learn another distro’s specific ways. I’ve tried mandrake and rpm years ago, but debian simply was the golden standard I used at school and on PI.

It’s kinda hard to accept they are debuting paid work on something that only works on pre-2022 devices… I do understand the recycling idea behind this, but next time I change my phone and look up for a linux compatible phone, I already know I won’t be buying a pre-2022 device :(…

I’ve been on seafile for years, I see no reason for the docker install to scare you.

I’ve been meaning to migrate to an european alternative (seafile is essentially chinese), but none seem to have the notion of zero-trust.

I’ve checked both opencloud and sync-in. In both cases, if you are the admin, you can access every one’s files. For now at least. This means a hacker accessing your server could also get the files uncrypted.

This is a no-go for me, I want my friends to be able to trust my instance so they can use it. Seafile has that : you can create an encrypted collection which asks for a second password when you open it.

Surely awesome, but sync is one-side only. This is a nogo for my usecases.

Seafile has fuse for accessing it as a folder.

Let’s say you are a webdeveloper trying to package your js app into a executable.

Tauri makes it so that it embeds your js into a rust base, and if you need to interact with the os, you have a Tauri JS API which calls predefined rust functions embedded in the executable.

You can literally never write rust code while using tauri.

But they givr you the choice, since rust is faster than compiled js, you also can create rust functions which you then call from your js code.

In Tauri, the rust backend is the glue between web/js and OS functions. Yet you don’t need to do any rust code, it’s delivered ready.

Tauri is the way to go ; so that every app doesn’t each embed another web browser that makes for 90% of the file size.

Well since it’s literaly us vs the planet (since we seem to be unable to regulate our society’s consumption of finite resources), the question is : does the planet exist for us to consume it ?

The answer is no, but we’ll still consume it.

Do we deserve to live ? Well outside of society, there is no reason we’re deserving it more than any living being. And sometimes I clearly wonder, when some individuals contribution is a big negative legacy for the next ones, and to the planet.

Tbh I do not mean we (humans) do not deserve to live, but I clearly wouldn’t want it taken for granted, cause it is not.

I don’t see how it replaces anything without audio & video calls. Doesn’t mattermost already cover this scope…? And a lot of other open source softwares… For me, the rarest and dearest feature is these fixed call channels you have in discord. Matrix and element have them, but their ui is shit. I’m waiting for it to be implemented on Cinny, there is a PR for that.

You were thinking linux windows’like, but did you thought about React OS ?

To my knowledge, Navidrome doesn’t allow music browsing by folder, only by artist/album. I had talked about this with its main dev a few years ago. For me this is a no go…
