It would be kind of hilarious if all of these were actually fully achievable in real life.

Magic is just close up street magic, if you select divine powers, someone offers you a job at the local cathedral. Radar sense, a box from amazon with some radar parts literally shows up on your doorstep.

From this chart, being attractive, smart, or rich are abilities, even gadgets is listed. Logically it doesn’t make sense, but following the rules laid out, those are probably up for grabs.

Also, who knows what they mean by magic, maybe you can go look up David Blaine.

  • The way the story goes… They didn’t explicitly fuck up, some dude just though two snakes looked cooler than one and we’ve just been running with it for a few decades now. There is a story about how it was originally adopted by military personnel who transported medical supplies (along with messages so… it would kinda made sense) but the justification there does feel super cherry picked. Mostly, the accepted reasoning is that the caduceus is just a better design.

  • I’m conflicted on the projects like that one right now. It’s super clever to monitor the network traffic for specific dash buttons trying to reach out, but it also feels super janky and I don’t feel like I can justify putting the effort to set that up when it just feels so fragile. Especially with the caveat that if the amazon block you have to setup for it fails then the device just becomes a paperweight.

Genius idea, but I’m going to hold out for the unlikely possibility of someone figuring out a firmware level hack.

  • Amazon was effectively giving them away for free for a large portion of their lifespan. You’d have deals where you’d pay for them and then get a coupon for actually using them equal to the purchase price. I feel like I even remember a few times where the coupon you got worked out to slightly more than you paid for the button. Basically, saying that someone ‘bought’ one was usually only partially true.

They did have a few legitimately good uses. Had to have something that needed restocking sporadically but you also didn’t think about often and could wait 2-3 days to receive when you realized you were out. A lot of prerequisites there, I used the ones for trash bags and detergent often.

It’s mostly just a shame the amount of ewaste produced at this point. I still have a box full somewhere in hopes of finding a use case.

  • We are the poor.

Yes, there are poorer people out there, but I think we all kinda forget how big the divide is. It lets us put ourselves in a place where we feel like we’re doing well comparatively, but I think it’s important that we remember that we’re all being taken advantage of and we all deserve better. Yeah, definitely some will need a bit more uplifting than others, but it’s Us vs. Them, and I think we spend too much time trying to further sub-divide that ‘Us’. Thank you for attending my crazy segue.

We’re all poor enough to deserve those free nugs though.

  • Fucking podman… Oh man. I have lost way too many hours dealing with podman.

It’s frustrating, because they’ve put so much into it. It’s close enough that vendors think they can get away with saying their containers are compatible and they’ve probably really honestly tested for brief periods and it really usually is close enough that you don’t discover the differences until you’re already very well established, but then it’s just a little different and it takes you FOREVER to find out why but then the only option once you do find that out is to completely start over from scratch with docker. And, almost no vendor is going to treat them differently because if we talk to redhat, the first note we’ll get back is that everything we’re trying to do should be fully compatible and there should be no need to worry about that. And, then eventually after a few weeks, it’s docker’s fault that IT WORKS IN DOCKER AND NOT IN PODMAN. Docker needs to go fix it so it’s broken for them too, it’s not a bug for podman, the problem is with the one that’s working.

I’m a bit traumatized, not always the same, but this isn’t a singular occurrence.
