I’m considering hosting one, and I’m just curious how much effort I should invest in doing it “properly” for everyone to use as opposed to just dicking around on my own for testing purposes.

I don’t think there is a huge need at the moment. Things will probably develop naturally. E.g. if some communities find they would like one, they would start one, with rules, blocks, membership, financing that fits their needs.

More Tor friendly instances would be nice. Most Lemmy instances use things like Cloudflare that freak out over Tor connections so just registering/logging into the instance is a PITA, let alone browsing. Extra bonus if the instance actually hosts the Lemmy instance in Tor itself (though realistically the rest of the Lemmy instance would still run on the clearnet since it still needs to communicate with the rest of the Fediverse).

Interesting point. I’ll take .onion into consideration, as I’m a bit of a privacy-enthusiast. Unfortunately, too many “privacy enthusiasts” just want to trade CSAM, so it’s a balancing act.

Is there any merit to this claim?

Seems like some shit feds would say to normies IMHO

Well, even one is too many, and the number is much higher than one, so it still seems like a valid concern when running a service

just dicking around on my own for testing purposes.

Start with this, and if it gets traction, you can always move it to a more serious setup.

That’s pretty much what happened with this instance

Ada when are you going to start allowing trans people on blahaj again?

There’s still a whole 196 community you banned for not paying dragonfucker’s troll games.

I would first offer to help on existing instances. There are a few that are behind updates, so the admins could maybe use some help
