Starve now, or later?
Starve now, or later?
I don’t think I specifically posted about it on lemmy but yeah, I also concluded youtube would be going further ‘pay to win’ around this time 2 years ago.
Twitch will keep getting more and more monetized / ad heavy as well, until it just gets shutdown.
I’ll be amazed if it still exists by the end of 2026.
No they come in a frozen bag and are microwaved.
I will only use this if it uses Clippy’s animations.
Thats… what this is, right?
Clippy 3.0?
I mean… basically yes?
They could prop up AM radio talk shows.
Thom (sp?) Hartmann and Sam Seder are … basically the only two left wing, ‘big name’ radio talk shows that still even exist post the 00’s.
They exist almost entirely off of small individual donations…
Do the same thing for left wing youtubers/twitch streamers.
Almost all left wing people like that with any name recognition are doing it without any big name donors, as opposed to the Republicans who have a myriad network of wealthy donors basically bankrolling them.
… and that would just be mirroring the Republican strategy.
Maybe they could actually innovate too?
But yeah, this would be like … 30 years too late.
What did the Dems do wrong?
Be unimaginably complacent by placing their faith in the integrity of norms and institutions that the Republicans have very obviously been trying to destroy for about 20 years.
Its the primary problem of being a liberal.
You just assume the rules and norms you follow apply to everyone.
It is not part if their worldview that those rules and norms can be destroyed by cleverly manipulating them against themselves.
What should they do now?
Pff, I dunno, its too late, we have now arrived at fascism.
I’ve been saying this (along with actually shift your platform to the left instead of to the right) to every mainline, Obama will save us all and everything is fixed now, standard liberal Democrat for almost 20 years.
They have all acted like I am a hyperbolic delusional nutjob when I explain that the status quo trajectory will sooner than later lead the country further and further to the right untill we end up with corporate theocratic fascism.
Well now we have that.
Its… kinda like the climate, or preventative medicine and a base healthy lifestyle vs checking into the ER as an overweight smoker who broke their leg from the pain of trying to pass a kidney stone.
Fixing the mess is orders of magnitude more costly and difficult than preventing it.
I am 35.
My entire lifetime, the way Dems run presidential campaigns, the way they push the message is heavily, heavily reliant on mainstream legacy media outfits talking about and repeating their announcements and rallies.
Meanwhile, the Republicans do the same… but they also control the vast majority of talk radio stations, and since the internet came into wide use, the number of popular internet figures with overt right wing tendencies just vastly, vaaaastly outstrips similar figures on the left, in terms of viewership and funding.
Basically, the Dems still think that dying legacy media, with fewer and fewer readers/viewers, that increasingly has to sell out by running more bombastic, shocking news, and/or cowtowing to the whims of their corpo owners…
… they still think that this nearly dead legacy media will give them the same treatment as in the 70s, when there were only 3 fucking TV news channels and newspapers op eds were far more influential.
They should have learned that they needed a real way of pushing their message after 2015/16.
Trump dominated the media without paying anything for it simply by being bombastic and saying insane shit.
That should have set off a whole bunch of alarm bells that … Dems can’t rely on news stations giving roughly equal air time to them.
But it did not.
The Republicans, through their various think tanks and foundations, funded the hell out of every one willing to repeat their message on any medium for 35 years.
Dems have never had anything like this, even though the average Republican thinks George Soros is doing something like that.
Now, combine all of the above with another trend the Republicans have manifested into reality over 35 years:
Public Education has been decimated. The average American now has critical reading comprehension skills roughly equivalent to a 6th or 7th grader.
So even if huge numbers of people were still reading Op-Eds in papers… they would not understand any moderately complex discussions of policies, or history, or economics or anything anyway.
… And this is all just a critique of how the Democrats have been at distributing their messages.
The actual content of those messages is an entirely different failure.
Now now, Elon does technically have one patent to his name personally.
Its the shape of the charging port for Teslas.
He patented this with the idea that if he ever did actually build out that massive EV charger network, he would basically be owed royalties if it successfully became the USB C of EV charging ports, so himself personally would be owned royalties if other car companies wanted to use that charging port shape.
But that was like a decade ago, and last I heard he fired the entire team at Tesla dedicated to the charging network.
Unless you really want to split hairs on a per article basis, in general, it is both.
If your subject for parody is ‘news about current events’, then you can argue that anything presented in the format you would expect from a newspaper, but comically exaggerated, counts as parody.
If a certain Onion article is fairly clearly a modification or exaggeration of a specific news event, it fulfills another common attribute of parody by having a specific thing it is parodying.
But sure, some of their stuff falls more into satire.
Satire more often has a more … thorough and deliberate alteration of a base material or style, with the intention of conveying a more intentional critique of or commentary on the source, a fairly obvious prescriptive moral message, by subverting it in specific ways…
… as opposed to parody, which, by itself, doesn’t really need to have a ‘message’, it can be just a level of exaggeration that is humorous in and of itself.
Generally, most of the Onion’s produced content is both parody and satire.
No.
The Onion, and parody in general, aims at being an exaggerated caricature of the truth, something that has a kernel of plausibility in its core, but has elements or scale that is blown out to ludicrous extremes, or is framed in an unexpected way such that it inherently juxtaposes a social approach to a certain realm of topics with another realm of topics, exposing a double standard that larger society has.
Parody is not just ‘plausible, but fictional.’
That would … just be a hoax, mis or disinformation, or realistic fiction if not presented as news.
… The fact that it is so difficult now to tell many parodies from a person’s or group’s actual actions or statements, or complex events… this speaks to an increasingly extreme world, it speaks to … basically the death of a general concept of ‘normal’ from which parody can grow.
I ran PopOS on linux for years, every game I had worked, and actually performed better than on Windows, once Proton got to version 7.
** oh and almost all of those games use anti cheats that are compatible with linux/proton, and have been for 3 years, but the game devs/management just refuse to enable that support, even though its already included in their contracts with AC providers for no extra cost.
You can get a dock and plug in a mouse and keyboard, a monitor, etc…
Every single time I mention that Krita is basically an older version of photoshop, someone appears and says this.
I never said its a photoshop clone, as in it has parity with modern photoshop.
I said it can basically be used as one would have photoshop from a decade ago.
This is true, no matter whether or not it was ‘designed with drawing and digital media creation in mind.’
If you need something with more options and features than GiMP, or you don’t like GiMPs user interface… Krita works quite well.
Fucking incredible.
I’ve used Shotcut on PopOS.
Worked pretty well for doing something about as complex as a editing together a typical youtube video.
Hell I even managed to get it to support h.265 after some tinkering. h264 and hevc worked as well.
Also, in a similar vein… Krita is basically Photoshop from about a decade ago in terms of functionality, less outdated UI and more functional than GiMP, though its a bit chonkier (memory / CPU intensive).
This immediately reminded me of ‘ear candles’
https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/ear-infection/what-is-ear-candling
… I have been berated and belittled as a closed minded fool for pointing out to a former friend group that uh, ear candling is a scam, there’s no way it can work, the ‘experts’ doing in person ‘treatments’ are unqualified, charge an absurd amount of money, and can actually harm you.
… This was the beginning of an insane series of dramatic bullshit whereupon I learned that this friend group consisted of a 350 pound person who demanded everyone find them attractive and healthy, and has panic attacks/seizures whenever someone doesn’t, an antivax nurse, a ‘professional’ astrologer and tarot reader, and a self described ‘leftist socialist’ pursuing an MBA.
This group of people decided I was an asshole for not paying $300 for one of them to get their… ear… candled…
Don’t worry, you can develop a WarThunder addiction hobby and know neither financial self control, nor joy!
So basically they have … something like a collective dunning kruger effect which manifests as an abnormally high ‘dumb luck’ stat or modifier?
You are apparently unaware of the literal tens of thousands of youtube/twitter/media people who basically did/do nothing other than promote Elon and everything he does.
Elon Musk Can Multitask Better Than You.
Elon’s new Hyperloop will revolutionize transit in America!
Tesla’s stock price will be $42,690 per share in 5 years, here’s why.
…
Its about a million times more obnoxious than people pointing out that Gabe actually knows what he’s talking about.
…
You can go outside and strike up a conversation with any random person, and they will almost certainly know who Elon is, and most people will still think he is some kind of genius real life Tony Stark.
You can go outside and strike up a random convo with any random person about Gabe, and chances are 98% of people will have no idea who you are talking about, unless you are at some kind of nerd/geek type outing like a video game convention, and even then, people under 20 - 25 are not likely to know who he is.
EDIT: Yeah, I am actually fairly confident that for you to make a statement like that, you probably, unironically, need to touch grass.
I fail to see any way you could have that opinion other than that basically all you do is argue on video game forums / discords / twitch / whatever, and that you just have almost 0 contact with real life human beings, or online spaces that do not revolve around video games.
